Therapy Groups

So I used to be totally against groups for things like trauma, dbt, anxiety, and stuff like that. But a couple months ago I decided that I would try them out again.I have been in a trauma group for two almost three weeks. t is helpful but I can't retain a lot of the things we go over. That is actually why I don't like groups I don't retain the stuff.
I have a therapy session with my therapist next Monday on the 30th. We are going to go over the plan for DBT. We are doing a new DBT program which is going to be really intense. Instead of just a group once a week we are also going to have a individual therapy session once a week as well. DBT is usually a year but we are doing it in 6 months, that's why it's intense.
Now I am really excited to start it, because I know it is going to help me so much. We are hoping by the time I finsih DBT I will be able to get a job and keep it, be a lot more independent so I can hopefully move out and live on my own(with a roommate probably).
But I am just afraid I may not retain the information, but then again if I meet with Tammy once a week as well then she can help me when I get stuck.
I think I may bring up my concern about not being able to retain the information. But it may be different since I actually WANT to do it this time around. All the other times I was basically forced into it.

I think that it is great that you will be doing both group sessions and an individual DBT! It seems like you have some clear goals, like getting a job and getting independence, and that might be relaly helpful.
I think it would be worth it to bring up your worry about retaining information. It definitely might be different now that you want to do the groups and the DBT, but it may be good to have a plan in place in case you do have a difficult time. That way, it's addressed right away so you can get the most out of both your group and individual sessions.
Good luck! I know you can do this!Posted July 25th 2018 at 02:47 AM by Hypothesis.
