Crying before I fall asleep. - August 11th 2012, 03:16 PM

I've been crying a lot before falling asleep lately. I suddenly feel really depressed when I go to bed. Once I wake up I feel fine :/ it's like my brain needs to reset or something.

I just think about depressing memories in bed. I also think about my family/friends/self dying.

Why is this all happening before I fall asleep? I get nightmares due to this too >.>

I know EXACTLY how you feel I used to think about family members dying too... and how sad the funeral would be and how it would impact everyone else's life, etc. etc. Then I used to think about how horrible it would be for my mum if I died... I could drive myself to tears with stuff like this going around and around in my head.

I don't know what it is about the nighttime, but it seems to have a greater impact on these thoughts than daytime. Plus you're more likely to be alone so there's noboy to distract you from these thoughts.

Perhaps have some soft music that you like playing while you go to sleep? That way, if you start to think horrible thoughts, you can just concentrate on the music and maybe sing along if you have to- anything to keep your mind off it.

As for why they're happening, well everyone has different reasons for depression... are you seeing a counsellor? on antidepressants? These things can really help and it's much, much better than being miserable every night.

I am on citalopram and I have cognitive behavioural therapy with a mental health nurse. I haven't seen my mental health nurse in a while but I have an appointment with her on Tuesday. I probably will tell her

I like the music idea. Classical music always seems to help me sleep.

Thanks <3
