My friend committed suicide - September 23rd 2012, 06:28 AM

A friend of mine recently committed suicide. I spent some time trying to talk her out of it through email because she lived in Scotland but after her boyfriend broke up wit her she was determined. I feel like if I spent more time trying, trying harder I could have saved her.
These feelings have made me feel depressed and I have begun to cut myself at school. Also, if I hear the word death or think about it too much I feel anxiety creep in and I have panic attacks. She only died a week ago, does anyone have any advice?

I'm really sorry to hear about your friend! Please know that it is not your fault what happened to her! You tried and you did what you could to help her, but ultimately it was up to her to seek help. I know how tough a loss can be, especially a loss that could have been prevented! Of course you are having a hard time at the moment, anybody would. I think it would be best to explain to others what happened so they can be understanding and supportive of you at this point in time! Time is what heals. Please don't hurt yourself though! Try and do something positive when you are feeling upset/anxious....talk to a friend, go for a walk, listen to music, etc!

I feel deeply sorry for your loss, please know this is not your fault! You can not always save someone who is determined with their true intentions for death. I know this may be hard but you have to acknowledge that she is gone. You have to take control of your own life now, if you keep thinking about how much this hurts you and acting on it ( like you said cutting ), you mental health is at risk. If this goes on for too long you are likely to end up in the same position as she was in. Please seek advise from a qualified counselor/ phone or hotline counselling service , psychologist , social worker or other health profession. Also please give up cutting, it will just make you feel even more isolated and depressed, I use to cut when I was very depressed and it was the worst decision I ever made, you may think that you deserve it or that you want to feel pain but is it really worth it? , I mean once you start you can get addicted and you can have ugly scars their that just stare at you for the rest of your life, they haunt you when your looking for a boyfriend, when your going for job interviews and when ever you want to reveal that part of your body.
