Therapist?? - July 30th 2017, 03:14 AM

As you probably know I have a lot of mental problems and a history with self harm and suicide (if you didn't, read "my story summed up"). Should I see a therapist or not. Idk if my mom would let me because she thinks/wants to believe I'm perfectly fine. Plus I'm kinda a closed book, so I don't really tell anyone anything. Should I or should I not see a therapist?

Hey there,

I think that there could be a lot to benefit from if you were to see a therapist. I think sometimes there are some negative connotations with therapists, and sometimes people such as parents may not think you 'need' to see one. I have spoken to a few people when studying at university who are firm believers that even if you don't NEED to see a therapist, it can still be really useful! If you're considering it and you think you may benefit from it, I'd say go for it. You can discuss this with your parents and let them know that while they may not think you necessarily need a therapist, you feel like you could gain a lot from having a few sessions with one anyway.

Also, don't be put off because you're a bit of a closed book. Therapy isn't about turning up and spilling all on the first session. Bare in mind that the therapist will be aware that a client/therapist relationship has to be formed, and that sometimes this can take time. If you're a bit nervous about opening up, let them know this and that is something you can work on with them. Patience will help you a lot there. And it may be uncomfortable to open up, but bare in mind that the point of therapy is sometimes to learn to cope with uncomfortable things in order to get yourself to a better place psychologically, so challenge yourself, and let your therapist know when anything is too much of an issue. Push yourself, but don't force yourself to do anything which will make you more unhappy in the long run.

Hi There,

I agree with Hollie and that you could probably benefit from seeing a therapist, especially if you having issues with SH/suicide. Therapist can help you out, and it's honestly a great source to have. It can be hard when your mom doesn't think you need one but if you're comfortable maybe sit down and share with her why you think you could use benefit from seeing one. Another good way of getting parents to listen is having a teacher or school counselor explain what's been going on. Honestly, when I was your age that's the reason my parents put me into counseling. Sometimes hearing it from another adult makes them understand better!

I 100% understand being a closed book. But honestly therapist are trained to deal with that. I've been seeing my current therapists for a quite a few months now and I'm only just beginning to let him see all of the darker parts that I hid so well the first few months I knew him. They get it and they'll work with you on how to get you to to open up. For instance my counselor allows me to e-mail him any of my thoughts that I have inbetween sessions and that's how I was able to tell him about the bigger things I had been hiding! I'm sure you and your counselor will be able to figure something out that works for both of you!
