Question Service Animal - July 3rd 2018, 06:58 PM

Iím thinking about getting a service dog because of my bipolar disorder. Itís really hard for me to deal with on my own, and think answrvice dog would help me, even though Iím more of a cat person. Iím not sure if this post belongs in this forum, but feel free to move it. Anyway, I heard that getting a dog registered as a service animal is the easy part, but getting an actual service dog can be difficult. Especially if I want a breed like a husky, or something similar. Can anyone help give me information on how I can go about getting the dog breed as I want while it also being a service animal? Iíve done some research but Iím not getting any straight answers.

Hey,
You can go through an agency that will pair you with a dog that is able to do the tasks you want. I'm not sure there is a guarantee that you are going to get the bread you want. If you are really stuck with wanting that bread then I would say get a puppy and go through a service dog training place. Getting a service dog actually isn't easy at all. It is also really expensive.

The dog has to have at least two tasks( i believe) that it can do to help you. So some of those things might be: Bring you your medications, or remind you to take it, calm you down when your in a manic state, stop you from harming yourself.

If you are just looking for a dog to comfort you then I would say you can get a emotional support dog, for that you would need a note from a therapist or Psychiatrist.

I hope this helps a little bit.
Your Friend,
Frankie<3

I already know it will cost quite a bit of money, so thatís not my main issue. I donít want to buy a dog, but I want to adopt a purebred one. The agency advice is good thank you!
