My girlfriend is depressed - September 24th 2009, 05:39 AM

My girlfriend of over a year is depressed all the time at the moment. It's been getting progressively worse for a few months now. I think it may have been triggered when she went on holiday with her family in July. She said it was a really terrible holiday and she fought with her mother a lot, who was being very difficult, and she also witnessed somebody dying, as she was on a reef cruise and one of the divers had a heart attack in the water. Her aunt and uncle are doctors and tried to recussitate him but they couldn't and later, my gf had to talk to the police about what she saw. It was the only the second time she's experienced death, the first time being two days previous to this event, when her old dog was put to sleep.

It's so hard because she's always so down and just walks around with no enthusiasm. I try to get her to smile or laugh but she's always upset and nothing seems to make her happy.

I don't know what to do or how to help her. This is the second time she's had depression, the first being about 5 years ago.

hey.

anyone who's went through all that will probably carry an emotional scar of some sort that is probably going to be extremely difficult to try to heal in a short time. but the thing is that you're definitely doing the right thing just do one of those things that'll surprise her and definitely touch her deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep down there. And that might heal the wounds . I think that you definitely can do it because from the way you worded your message, i can definitely tell that you're up to the task because you're a wonderful, very special lover.

have faith in yourself because i know you can help her out. You can do this. alright?

update us on how this goes.

I have been through more death then most people go through in a lifetime. I can tell you that her depression is okay and even some what healthy, if it stays at just depression and starts to improve. You did say that that its getting worse. Have you talked to her? Asked her what is bothering her? If theres anything you can do to help? If you fear she might do something to harm herself, I suggest you get in touch with someone. I dont know whats offered in New Zealand, but I believe if you call the police, they can help you. True, she may hate you for it but it is much better then her doing something she cant take back. If you dont fear that, ask her to talk to a counsellor. If you can, offer to go with her. Ask her to even just speak to her family doctor about it. He can at least prescribed some anti-depressents for her.

She's also on the pill at the moment, to try and fix painful periods, and apparently that can make you depressed. Anyone know anything about that?

I'm making her see a counsellor, we're just waiting on an appointment at the moment. Hopefully they hurry up though, because she's getting impatient and says she feels like they don't care about her and she's starting to critisize the place, which is not good!

She says she doesn't know why she's depressed, but she just feels sad all the time, and that being sad is like the default feeling at the moment. She's crying pretty much every night before going to sleep now, sometimes over nothing at all. It scares me quite a bit. I've been through a lot of death also, so I know how to deal with it, but she never has and I don't know how I can help her, because she won't talk about it.
