Therapy "goals" - October 11th 2009, 10:24 PM

My psychologist asked me to set "goals" for therapy. I have no idea why I go, let alone what I want out of it.
If you don't mind me asking, what were some goals that you have set for yourself?

I turn my head to the east… I don’t see nobody by my side
I turn my head to the west… still nobody in sight
So I turn my head to the north, swallow that pill that they call pride
The old me is dead and gone, but the new me will be alright

I think it is great you are going to therapy. It can be really helpful and I hope you see the benefits.

My goals for therapy are:

Stop harming myself
Learn to accept and love myself
Learn better coping skills
Learn to deal with and overcome my past

The thing I want to say is that it took a long time for me to really know what my goals were; to cut them down to size and really get a focus. When I first started therapy I was going because my dad wanted me too and I knew that I needed help. The more you go to therapy the more you will start to see the things that need to be worked on.

If you really are not sure about what you want to get out of therapy you should tell your therapist and he/she could probably help you figure out some goals.

Therapists are there to listen and help you so try and be truthful with him/her.

Best of luck,

Jenna

Everyday
is so wonderful
And suddenly it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I feel so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Tryin' hard to fill the emptiness, the piece is gone
Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is?

'Cause you are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down, oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

It's good that your going to therapy.maybe try and think what you want to be better at, whether it be loving yourself, stop self harming or get along better with family or friends.

I think Jenna has given some good examples. Everyone has different goals of what they want out of therapy. I can remember when I first saw my psych I didn't know what I wanted out of it. I guess it can take time to work out those goals. But perhaps think back to the reasons why you chose to see the psychologist then that might help you to come up with some goals.
