Unhappy So, I'm depressed. ...I think. - March 30th 2010, 02:37 PM

Every once and awhile, I have swings where I'm sad, and upset and I just don't want to do anything. I know it's not PMS or anything. My boyfriend gets really concerned. Especially because I self-harmed once. He makes me really happy, but sometimes..it's just like the whole world is black and white. Clinical Depression runs in my family, so I don't know if I should be put on medication/who I should talk to/If you think this is depression. I would really like some help, please. Thanks, Anna.

Hey there Anna,

I'm sorry to hear that you're not feeling very happy right now and that you're experiencing mood swings which can make you sad. It's understandable that this isn't pleasant and that it can cause you to lose any motivation. It is possible that you do have a predisposition for depression if it runs in your family.

I think that if you are concerned and you're also causing other people to be concerned (which is a good thing - it's great that you have a boyfriend that sounds so supportive) then it would be a good idea to talk to someone about how you are feeling. You could talk to anyone who you're comfortable with but it may be the best idea to try and talk to a doctor or a counsellor. I would not recommend medication as the first line of treatment, but that is a personal choice. I'd reccomend a talking therapy and see how things go from there, hopefully they will improve.

Take care.

I agree with Stephanie, I think that the best thing to do would be to go to a counselor or a doctor. It sounds like you have a lot of people that care for you, and I'm sorry that you've been feeling this way lately. Good luck and take care. Hope things get better for you.

Thank you guys. The only problem is telling a parent. I know they're supportive. I'm just kind of afraid to. I don't want to put a burden on them..

But those sequins on her dress.. boy, they threw you over the edge.

Hey there,
I understand how hard telling a parent can be first hand. But trust me, it's totally worth it. I was in the same position you are in now and one night I just kind of broke down and told my mom everything. But I don't regret it. Because now my mom is more than willing to do what she can to help. And if she can't help me, she finds someone who can. And she is also more willing to let me talk to her and comfort me when I need it which is really helpful. If you think it's too hard to just tell your parent. Try writing a note. Sometimes that is easier. I know this can be scary, but don't let that stop you. You can do it.

Whatever it is, chances are I've been there.
If I can make it out, you can too.
