Help? - May 10th 2010, 05:45 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

I have no idea what thread to put this forum in, but I have a friend who has self harmed and is threatening suicide. He needs help, I have contacted the school counselor, who called him down, and presumably contacted his family, who does not wish to find him help. He says he doesn't want therapy, but he does however want antidepressants. I know he will need to go through therapy, and I think he can be swayed on those points, but what I want to know, is at what age can and individual seek mental health treatment without parental consent in the state of Illinois? I have heard it's fourteen, but I'd like confirmation with citations if possible, thanks.

For voluntary help, you need to be 12 for outpatient help, but restricted to 5 sessions. Need to be 16 for inpatient help.

I also noted on that site the mature minor doctrine, presumably having a court declare him to fit the requirements would remove the 5 session restriction, how would one approach this process, and would parental notification occur if one were to be declared capable of consenting to medical treatment?

I doubt that the courts would remove the 5 session restriction, unless during the sessions it seems like such an intense case that they would need to for fear of suicide, but they may also contact the parents at the 5th session to see if they would like to have them continue sessioning.
Unless your friend is old enough, I would have to assume, that unless parental consent is given, they would not continue sessions.
