What do YOU do to try and cheer up? - June 1st 2010, 04:18 AM

Just wanted to see what things people did to take whings off their mind. You know distractors, things to think about, do, ect.
My friend is extremely depressed right now and on top of it his gf just broke up with him and nothing can cheer him up that usually does and im actually getting really worried.
Im just looking for some ideas maybe from what other people do that may work for him.

I paint, draw, try listening to ridiculously happy music (like Happy Hardcore), amongst a few other things, but those are more efficient.

This may sound kinda corny but i like to be with nature. Like go take a walk in the woods or lay out under the stars. Other then that i just listen to music or play a game that rly makes me focus on it. Or fill my day with things i need to focus on. Like at work i focus on making my boss happy lol!

Things do get better in time.
I used to believe that things would never get better.

I write, or listen to music, or just try and get out of the house for a while.
I also do a couple of the ones here, sometimes, because they're not only useful when beating self-harm, but when feeling negative at all.
Hope your friend feels better soon!

I find reading, writing, playing with pets, listening to music, or watching a favorite movie (The Lion King for me ) helps a lot.

I usually read, write and listen to music. Sometimes all at the same time.

Going to the movies cheers me up a lot too. Because you don't have to focus on anything but the world in the movie for its duration.

Hanging out with friends may help too, if you're in the mood for interaction. Sometimes people need time to be by themselves so it may not neccessarily work. But simply hanging out with your friends (whether it be for a meal, movie or slumber party) can work wonders on your mood.

Re: What do YOU do to try and cheer up? - June 1st 2010, 03:36 PM

Some of the things I do/have done in the past are:
  • cook myself something nice
  • plan my next trip abroad (at the moment i have 2 going on - amsterdam and thailand)
  • go back to sleep for an hour and start the day again
  • watch one of the old school disney films like mary poppins of peter pan
  • clean my room while listening to some hapy music
  • go for a walk in the woods
  • go out with my friends and do something fun like go to the pub, have a barbeque or something where I know I will have to get involved and can't isolate myself.
  • If I feel as though I am at risk of hurting myself, I always do my best to make sure I am with friends and include myself in whatever we're doing to distract myself until the urge goes away.
  • read a book and get completely lost in it
  • go out and party! (although I don't recommend getting drunk/doing drugs to make yourself feel better - but being around people and getting in the party mood can definately help)
  • Sometimes writing down everything in my mind, even if it's just broken thoughts at first, and then burning the paper i wrote it on can help. It's good to get things out.

I LIsten to music or sing.

Ella.x I Like two of your ideas btw.
Going to sleep for an hour and starting the day again thats a realy good one.

But the one I liked the most is the writing it down then burning it. So its all down on paper but then burnt and its not inside anymore.

OP.

Just be there for him, talk to him offer to take him out

Re: What do YOU do to try and cheer up? - June 1st 2010, 07:28 PM

Here are the things I do:

-Listen to music

-Read
-Write stories/poems
-Journal/blog
-Get out of the house by:
-Going to starbucks
-Going to a movie
-Going to the Bookstore
-Going to the mall
-I drive around too
-Hang out with friends

I think that the most important thing for your friend to do is to not isolate himself. Isolation tends to make the depression 10x worse. And when it comes to depression we tend to want to isolate. Encourage him to get out there and have fun, etc. It could really help heighten his mood.

Hope this helped.
