All in my head? - May 8th 2011, 01:48 AM

i was talking to my friend, and she was saying i need to cheer up. i said i can't because i think i have depression. then she replied and said thats all in your head. I tried to figure out why its not but i don't know.

Is she telling the truth?
Is depression really all in my head?
i have been wondering..

From day one I talked about getting out
But not forgetting about
How all my worst fears are letting out
He said, "Why put a new address on the same old loneliness?"
When breathing just passes the time
Until we all just get old and die

The way I see depression is based on what you think, so technically it is all in your head. No, I'm no professional on this matter but based on experience when I think of something depressing I will generally become depressed, whereas if I occupy myself whether it's through doing something or listening to some music (not depressing music) I really am fine. You should try it out, disregard negative thoughts and think positive about life, and your future. The more negativity you think of the more you may feel sad, so it's best not to lay in the area.

If you ever need anyone to talk to, I'm always here.

You can take online tests to see if you MIGHT have depression, but don't follow these to the letter. If it indicates that you might have depression then go to a counsellor, or a GP or doctor and see how it goes from there. Depression is generally characterised by the period of time you have been feeling "depressed" for.
It is in your head, it's a mental illness. Just like anorexia and anxiety. With the right treatments you can re-work your thinking and stop the physical effects.

Hope this helps at all, stay strong. But remember it is OK to feel sad. It's NOT ok to dwell on it though. Accept the emotion in the moment, then let it move on. Stay strong xx

"Do not regret anything. Every choice, fuck up, spoken word, experience and emotion has brought you to this very moment. It has shaped exactly who you are. Do not regret who you are. You are unique. No one in the world is like you. In this sense, we are alone. Yet for this very reason, we all have one thing in common. Don't waste who you are, be everything you can be. You can achieve your dreams, you just have to genuinely try."

Depression is in your head but it's not that simple.

When we get depressed, it's because we're reacting to whatever situation we might be in. Different people handle things in different ways. For example; I spilled an entire mop bucket on freshly mopped floors last night and I almost started crying. My boss thought that was silly; he knew it could be mopped up easily, but I felt disappointed in myself and like I was taking up his time. So, while you're friend might see whatever you're sad about as silly and not that big of a deal, she is not you. We all have different stress levels, and we all have different experiences. Whatever you are feeling is completely valid, and you don't have to justify it to anyone else.

That being said, depression is based on our thinking. If you think negatively about something, then it is likely to not get better. If I tell myself "I cannot do this" over and over again, then I'm not going to be able to.

There is nothing wrong with you because you're depressed. It's also not wrong of you to not be able to just "cheer up". You're friend cares about you, and that's why they want you to be happy, but they might not understand how you're feeling even if you try to explain it.

If you change your thinking on different things, though, you are likely to feel better. We are talking via PM, and I'd like to keep talking to you about your problems and hopefully we can turn that thinking around.

Feel better, dear.
