Everyone experiences depression differently.

For some it's a chemical imbalance in the brain. (also known as the mind, so yes, it is all in the -mind-)
For others it's a phase from a certain hardship.
For others it's because the many of us teenagers and young adults are spoiled and not used to disappointment.
For few it's for attention.

This is no new fact really. It's your life, why even bother dealing with what other people say or think?

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

Depression affects emotions. Emotions are something in your mind. Depression is in your mind.

Not that that precludes it from being a valid mental illness. Pretty much all mental illnesses are in your mind, that's the point.

Mental illnesses are medical illnesses because they usually have to do with the brain/emotions and thoughts. Your depression is none of this person's business and it isn't her place to tell you what to do. Try not to let people like that get to you, there are too many of them and there will always be someone who believes that. It gets to me too.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I know that depression has to do with chemical imbalance.
It may be "in the mind" but starting depression is sometimes out of our control.

sorry i should of been clearer in how i said that ! sorry !
i know its in the mind ,, i know that's its a chemical imbalance . BUT she told me i could get over it in a like a week because i just have to convince my mind that its not real .. which btw im annoyed quite a bit by it ,

and i know all mental illnesses are in your mind pretty much ,its just how she thinks you can get over it in a matter of a week !

does this clear things up ,, a lickle bit

Some people find it easier than others to convince themselves out of physical illness and even depression. However just because it's possible for them does not mean it is for other people. I've studied depression ~ there's a physical cause for it. It's smallminded people like this that make discrimination against mental illness even harder to overthrow.

Re: depression is not in the mind !!!!!!!!! - July 20th 2011, 05:36 PM

Since everything is in the mind, is anything real? Is existence real? Where does this knowledge that 'we exist' come from besides subjective experience? If everything is unreal, then we might as well say that everything is real: our own experience of reality is all we've got, and it's the only source of insight and knowledge that we can depend on.

When people invalidate us, we can say, either directly or to ourselves: that's their experience of their reality. I have mine; and mine is just as valid to me as theirs is valid to them. We experience it differently.

Defining the term 'depression' isn't the point; words and concepts mean countless different things to different people, and there is no way to resolve that. Reconciliation and understanding arises when we are able to see past all words and concepts to touch the heart of what is truly there: an experience, a very real one. In this case, two very different experiences, that have been subject to the mistaken expectation of similarity, due to the natural limitations of human language.

"If limitations exist, it is because we have erased the possibility of potential."
