Is there a difference between thinking about death and suicidal thoughts? - August 6th 2011, 07:56 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Sometimes, I wonder what it's like to be on the brink of death and not being able to stop it. I wonder what it's like to take that final breath before passing away. I want to know what death feels like.

I have absolutely no desire to take my own life, but I do think about these things sometimes. Should I be worried that I do think about these things?

Thinking about death and feeling suicidal are definitely different things. I think it is natural to be curious about death to an extent. If the thoughts are obsessive, it can be a problem. But I don't think that thinking about death in general is a problem. There is a lot of philosophical literature that has sprouted from it.

Yeah, very different things. I think about death all the time, in a sort of interested way. I wonder about the idea of death, and I consider it's impacts etc. However, that's very different from saying, like, "I want to kill myself".. I think if you were genuinely considering suicide, you'd be in such a bad state that it'd be obvious you need help.

I think a lot of people think about death every so often ~ obviously it's something that we know is inevitable but we know so little about at the same time. It's not the same as actually wanting to kill yourself.

Thanks for the input. It's nice to know that I'm not going crazy after all.

Yes, I think it'd very different. You're normal. I've had both kinds of thoughts before, and thinking about death can almost be a positive experience. Suicidal thoughts are not.

Hey

Thinking about death is normal I'd say. Everyone thinks about it at some point.

Would you say that you idealise death or daydream about it? If you do that might be something to be concerned about.

If you simply think about it a lot, I wouldn't be worried.

Stay strong and keep safe
