No Meds - August 15th 2011, 09:28 PM

Is it possible for someone who's depressed to the point of being suicidal to improve and be happy without being on antidepressants?

Of course it is possible. I, personally, came out of a very suicidal depression without drugs. However, if you are seeing a professional, and they recommend drugs, I would consider taking them.
Personally, I am one who doesn't strongly believe in anti-depressants, I think they're best when used temporarily and then easing off of them. I'm not one who would want to rely on drugs for my entire life, and think they if they're going to make you dependent on something, I'm not a huge fan. Plus, I personally believe depression can also be cured naturally by changing other aspects of your life, such as diet or situations such as work.
However, some swear by them, and for some people, the chemicals in their brain need to be re balanced permanently.
It's all preference, it's all opinion. Listen to your doctors, but also, listen to your gut. Have a great day!

It usually depends, more than anything, on the underlying cause of the depression. If it's a genetic factor, you may have a harder time overcoming without medication. If it's environmental, however, then you have a better chance of getting through it with therapy and support.

Well, say it's definitely hereditary. Even though it has to do with my brain chemistry, can I get better without medication?

Maybe, maybe not. I'd suggest trying St.John's Wort, just because it's herbal, and might be a nice alternative.
