Cat; cheaper, easier and definitely a lot cuter! I want a Persian lol. Compared to a dog, who can be great companions, but I have only had a German Shephard when I was little. If you do go for a dog, don't get a small one, they are all feral and vicious - they like to bite.
SO FLUFFY!!!

I'm a total cat person here's the things to consider
Cats are less expensive
They pretty much do their own thing so they're good if you aren't home a lot
And they live longer
You don't have to walk them in the freezing cold

Depending on what you're looking for
Cats: are cheaper, easier to leave alone and usually cleaner, and they can be really good animals but they are usually a one person kind of animal, my cats only like me and me alone, although they are civil to others in my household, they sleep with me, listen to me and only really come around when i'm home. but they can still be really affectionate and people friendly like dogs.

Dogs: more expensive, hard to leave alone for periods of time and can be messy depending on the dog also they need more care, such as walking regularly especially if you get a big dog, but they do tend to get along well with most people, good to have around and can make you feel safer if you live alone.

No matter which one you choose make sure you do your research and make sure you have the means to take care of whichever one you choose, also id suggest looking at your local shelters, shelter animals although sometimes have a bad repuatation can be some of the best and most loving pets to own. Good luck

Hey.

I'm going to echo a lot of what Tessa's said, because she got the gist of what I was thinking.

Basically, it depends what you're looking for. Since I have no idea about your living situation or anything like that, I can't really recommend one animal over another. There are advantages to both cats and dogs (and ferrets I'd assume, although I'm less familiar with them), so you have to look at what your situation is and which would fit better with you. If you tell me a bit more about yourself (ie. will the animal be left alone a lot, do you have any experience with pets, who else lives with you, do you have a yard or access to parks/reserves, etc?) I might be able to give you a better idea of what I think would suit your lifestyle.

As for me, I currently have both a cat and a dog, and I love them both. I plan to have both again in the future, although I've very slightly more of a cat person than a dog person. Like I said, they're good for different things, and it depends on your circumstances and what you're looking for.

Hope to hear from you soon.

I like cats the best. They're so cuddly, cute, and calm. And I'm rambling. Like the others said, get the pet that makes you most comfortable and that you'll be okay with keeping long-term.

I'm surprised about how cat oriented this has been so far! And will still be. I love cats, personally. They're so personal, and cuddly, and stay by your side. I just love 'um. They're cheaper as well, don't require as much attention, but shtill are adorable. Overall, I vote for cats.

I love both cats and dogs, but I'm definitely more of a dog person. Just personal preference. Like everyone else has said though, you just need to take into account what's affordable for you... vet bills when it comes to any animal can be expensive so, it's really just up to what you want in the end.

Wow! Loads of cat lovers on here. I adore both but I'd go with a cat. They're not as high maintenance as a dog and I love the way they walk. I know that probably sounds silly but they're so graceful. I can almost imagine them in the wild stalking prey but then I snap back to reality to see a cute fuzzball staring up at me. :3

I'm going to be weird, but I say a dog. I love cats, but I like dogs better. Cats kind of scare me because they scratch people more. lol but once a new cat gets used to you I don't think it scratches as much, It depends. Plus most dogs can't hide in very small places and sneak up on you like I know some cats do. And if a dog gets out, I think it is easier to catch them then a cat. My Spanish teacher lost her cat this year and she just moved to a new house and her cat was gone for a long time. When she found him he was so skinny and sick. Plus you get more exercise with dogs because you can take them for a walk. You can play outdoors and indoors with a dog. Most cats play indoors. Yeah sure dogs make more noise and messes, but I love them. Sorry to all of you cat lovers.

I'd rather a cat. I've had a cat since I was born and so has my nan who I'm pretty close to, so it's definately what I'm comfortable with. Plus, they're so cute and cuddly and playful and easier to look after. And funny to watch sometimes too.

I'm going to echo everybody else who has already said that it really depends what you're looking for. Not to mention, it also depends on how much space you have where you live, the funds available to you to provide for a pet and how much time for attention you have to give.

This is a tough one for me though because I have a dog and two cats but I'm going to go with a dog. I'll be honest, getting my dog has been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. He's my best friend. I had a really rough time with depression and use to struggle to leave my house, but the arrival of my dog gave me a reason to leave my house and a purpose to be alive. He was mine so I had to take him out for a walk, I had to get up in the morning to feed him and let him out to go to the toilet. Not to mention, seeing him grow and progress with training was a really rewarding experience.

I think dogs become a bigger part of the family because they rely on you more than a cat does. One thing that's for sure is that whatever animal you decide to get, they love you unconditionally and couldn't care less whether you're looking a mess or anything.

Hopefully when you end up deciding on what to get you'll post some pictures so that we can all see your new addition to the family!

Personally I'd rather have a cat. Dogs make me nervous, and I've always loved cats.

Re: Would you rather have a dog or a cat? - May 27th 2012, 05:38 AM

I'm going to say a dog. I pretty much got my dog when I was five or six, and a week and a day ago I had to put her down. I have known people to have cats, but never have I gotten as much love and affection from these cats as I have from not only my dog, but my sister's dog and other family member's dogs. They are so loyal and loving, and mine stayed by my side through a lot. She was a really great cuddle buddy too, and fun to play with. Not to mention I used to be allergic to cats, and while they don't really bother me anymore when I visit friends with cats I'd be wary to have one all the time just in case, they used to put me into way bad asthma attacks when I was a kid.

Cats can be mean and snap at any moment. Thats why im a little scared of them also there claws hurt. I would go with a dog there much more fun and they give you love back and you can take them places unlike a cat you cant really.

i never had a dog but i would like to have one. i always had cats 1 trained and all the others stray. the thing is cats are for more relaxed people who like to play little and sit around more. while dogs are more of the playful type like you can take them for walks or swimming etc.
also dogs have been known to be mans best friend

I'm a dog person. They seem to be up for playing and cuddling more than cats do but I've never had a cat to know whether it depends on the cat, just from what I've seen, dogs seem better.

It depends on what sort of personality you want in a pet.
Dogs are loyal and somewhat dependant on you.
While cats are independant and like to stroll around the neighbourhood.
I love both dogs and cats because I've grown up with all sorts of animals.

I've always prefered dogs, mainly because they aren't as temperamental as cats. Also, I can be really energetic at times and even my two nine year olds dogs start playing with me and the younger dogs, whilst my five year old cat is all mean and just sits outside waiting for her food
