Had to put one of our dogs down - January 15th 2014, 08:31 PM

On Saturday we had to put one of are five dogs down because he wouldn't eat he was skin and bones and he was turning yellow. The doctors said it would be a lot of money to try and figure out what was wrong and then to treat it so my grandma and grandpa decided to put him down. so Saturday we went to the vets and I was in the room when the put him down. I cannot get the image of him lying dead out of my head now. Here is a picture of him right before we put him down.

Sometimes it's hard, to follow your heart
Tears don't mean you're losing, everybody's bruising,
Just be true to who you are

I am so, so sorry about that. Truly I am. It is so difficult to lose a pet because they become so close to you and share a bond that you just may not be able to have with a human. At the very least, he is not suffering from whatever it is that is wrong with him anymore. I've lost a dog before and my sister recently lost hers (due to not eating and expensive treatments as well), so if you ever need to talk, I'll definitely be there!

Maybe it can help to keep a scrapbook or other form of a memory book about him. You can put pictures of you and him on it, and maybe write down some of his favorite things or some memories you have about him. I know when my dog had to be put down I kept some of her belongings as well like some toys she liked, so maybe you can do something similar to have something to remember him by.

Allow yourself to grieve, though. It's hard, but let yourself go through the grieving process, such as crying if you need to cry, talking if you need to talk, or just taking care of yourself since that is really important. It will get easier over time, but it's still fresh.

He'll be at peace now. I don't know what your beliefs are but I think that he'll always be with you in your heart and your spirits, there to lift you up when you're feeling down and give you a friendly lick when needed. He'll definitely live on in your memories, and that's what is important.

Let it come and let it be...

I'm so sorry to hear about this. On January 21, it will be one year after my dog was put down when he had a stroke. Even though it has been almost a year for me, it still bothers me to this day. Grieving a lost pet takes time, and trying to rush the process just makes things worse. Things will hopefully get better with time, as they did for me.

KoKo wasn't that close to me so it wasn't that hard. I didn't even cry when they put him down.

That's a great idea but I don't think I need to do that considering I wasn't really close to the dog.

I will if I feel the need to but right now I feel sad but that's about it.

I believe he is in a better place and is much happier.

Thank you for your post

I'm so sorry to hear that. Losing a pet is never easy, even if you weren't that close to them, and potentially losing two in a short time span can be absolutely devastating. Just remember that at least they won't be in pain anymore.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Maybe you could get a locket that you could open up and inside maybe you could put in a picture of the both of you on one side and on the other side, maybe you could put "Gone, but not forgotten" or it could be anything you it to be.

I'm really sorry about that. As for your other dog, if it's just his personality and there's nothing wrong with him physically, can't you give him away instead of putting him down? I don't see any reason to put him to sleep just for that.
