Should I? Shouldn't I? - June 22nd 2015, 05:00 PM

Hey guys, I've got a little dilemma and I'd like some outside opinions on this.
My best friend has four snakes and one of them has recently laid eggs (it was probably a few weeks ago now, perhaps coming up to almost a month) and word has it that the eggs are in good condition so there may be baby snakes on the way!
And because she already has four snakes plus the fact that there are 27 eggs, my best friend will have to look for people who are willing to look after them.

And my dilemma is whether I should have a snake or not.

I'd love to have a snake because I've always wanted another pet apart from cats- I remember begging my dad for a tortoise one year and for a bearded dragon another but it never happened.
My only problem is that I become anxious around similar types of things, my anxiety riles up when new or unfamiliar situations occur and because I've never held a snake I'm anxious about getting one. Maybe it's because when I was younger I assumed that all snakes were deadly so I tended to avoid them (and other animals) with a passion.

But I'd think it'd be great for me to have a snake because I'd get used to its presence etc. and I wouldn't become so anxious about touching or holding it. I had a similar situation with cats because a neighbor's cat used to scare me as a kid because it was always in our front garden but when mum and I got a cat from my stepbrothers' neighbor my anxiety eased up and I freaking love cats.
Mum and I had a little word about it beforehand after my stepdad asked me about it- funnily enough- and we'd have to buy a terrarium (she accidentally said aquarium so that's a running gag between us ) and have to feed and clean it etc. and those things don't worry me because I'm sure mum will help.

My initial problem in this dilemma is my anxiety of the possibility of having a snake but not the problems and things that are required to keep and look after a snake.
Maybe it's just excitement at the possibility? Because when I get excited my anxiety tries to balance it out. I don't know.

Is it possible for you to go round your friends house and handle their snakes a bit? If part of the anxiety is because of not holding a snake before then this would be very beneficial.

Once you have a snake, depending on the species, they can be a really low maintenance pet. You only have to feed them once a week and as long as you spot clean you don't have to clean them terrarium/vivarium that regularly.

Hey there,

I would agree with the user above and suggest handling some of your friend's snakes before you decide on whether a snake is the pet for you. Maybe you could speak to your friend about the things you would need to take care of the snake as well. You could read up on the type of snake you would be getting, definitely do your homework before you make a decision.

Hi there,

I would recommend looking up a lot of information about snakes and has the above users have mentioned, maybe you could go over to your friends place and help to take care of her snakes.

Hope I helped.
