Have you used daycare camps? - May 29th 2018, 11:31 AM

I got a new job recently and have to be out of home for most of the day. So my retriever Maddy stays alone and I'm afraid she doesn't have much to do in the house except waiting for me or destroying some shoes. I wonder if daycare camps are really so good like they describe themself?

Heya

I work as a pet sitter and I do daycare for dogs/puppies. I would highly recommend actually going to the daycare and see how it all is. Ask lots of questions as it paints a picture of how they are.

How long are your shifts? Can you afford daycares for Maddy?

Daycare for dogs is much the same as it is for children - it's a place where you can leave your dogs during the day so they can interact with other pooches and people instead of being home alone while you're gone. They can be great for socialisation and enrichment, as well as peace of mind since you know your pet is being looked after.

As for whether they're any good - that really depends on the individual place. As Delwen said, it's usually a good idea to visit the the daycare before making any decisions. Take note of things like how clean it is, how many dogs there are, what kind of activities are offered, and how the staff act (both with you and around the dogs). Be wary if staff don't answer any of your questions openly, as some places may not be as good as they appear to be and therefore staff may try to mislead you a bit. That said most places are not like that, but just trust your gut if you get a weird vibe about the place. You could also try looking into reviews before making a decision.

Another thing to consider is the idea of having a dog walker. That can be less expensive than daycare but still give your dog something to do during the day. Regardless, I think it's great that you're looking at ways to keep your dog happy and occupied while you're away, and hopefully you can find a strategy that works for both of you.

Daycares for dogs can run high in price. I've heard great things about dog walkers. You would still be able to shop around until you found a dog walker who met your needs and the needs of your dog. My family utilized a dog walker for a bit and the dog loved it and she was pretty amazing.
