ok, he's a guinea pig, as you know.
he has this patch of skin on his side about as big as my fist and it's thinning hair. you can like see pink dots and stuff. it's pitiful. when you pet him, it's like petting him normally, until you get to the patch of hair, and it feels like a drop off like someone has shaved his side. he's only about 4 months old. mom think it's mites, but i don't think it is. i'm really worried

I had a problem with Ellie (my GP) getting a dry patch of skin on her side. There were no mites or anything. It didn't help that she continued to scratch it. Eventually she left it alone and now it is fine. However, if you are worried then I would take your pet to the vet. One of the things that you can do to prevent mites from the shavings is to place them in the freezer for a while. This will kill the critters and make the bedding safe to use. I don't freeze mine because we've never had a problem, but it is a good idea and I probably should do it.
According to this site fur loss means that your pig is not getting an sufficient diet. Quote:

Just in case you should take them to the vet. It could be mites, a fungal infection or other problems. And you don’t want to let this slide by just because they “look” better. My guinea has a fungal infection right now. He’s getting old, and doesn’t always move away once he uses the bath room. : ( Anyways, it’s the same symptoms, dry skin, loss of hair, specs on skin. And the cure is to wash them wish a special shampoo. So just in case, I would take them to the vet. Wouldn’t want your guinea to be in pain!
