Sudden pet allergy? - July 9th 2009, 05:48 PM

I've had cats all my life and i've never had any problems.
The other day, however I was giving my 12 yearold cat a cuddle. I've been uber attached to her since I got her, she's my little Princess but I started sneezing like crazy, my nose just got bunged up and my eyes got really sore. I had to put her out of the room.
I thought it was just a one-off but the same thing happened again when I cuddled her next.
It's not soso bad, I always just take an allergy tablet and wash my face in cold water and it soon clears up, but it's bothered me.

Can people randomly become allergic to their pets?
Or is it something that's just there pretty much the whole time, which makes what happened to me something really random?

I just don't know alot about allergies.

Actually, the same thing happened with a friend of mine with my cats. She came over for at least 3 years while we had them, and then all of a sudden within the last few months whenever she is near my cats she has the same symptoms you do. She went to the doctor, and found it was allergies.

So to answer your question, yes, it can happen randomly (but not in the way you're thinking). Supposdly our bodies change every 7 years, so it's quite possible your body chemistry has changed, and now, unfortunately, you're allergic to cat fur.

As long as it's not an extreme case of allergies, like your throat closing up or something of that sort, then just by taking pet allergy medication should continue to help immensely.
