Cuddly pets? - July 15th 2009, 02:18 AM

What types of smaller pets are just content to sit in your arms/hands and cuddle with you? My ferrets refuse to let me cuddle with them. I know about sugar gliders, but the cost of them would be a bit much right now($300 for both + $180 for the cage + supplies). Can anybody think of any other types of small pets that like to cuddle?

Guinea pigs for sure, they are such snuggle bunnies and the love the social attention. I have one, and he loves to just sit in my lap and watch tv with me. Cops is his favorite show, I think it’s the red and blue lights that he likes.

Here he is lounging in his chair.

My cat likes to cuddle up, maybe a bit too much. Whenever you're busy doing anything if he wants to cuddle he'll try to force his way into your arms or lap. It's kind of cute but kind of annoying at the same time lol.
My cat is small, but I don't know how small you mean by small. I've never had any smaller pets though, except fish, but they're not prone to cuddling.

I've never had one, but chinchillas seem like they'd be pretty cuddly.

A small sized dog :]
Kind of like my dog, he's 20 pounds, and sits in your lap. Or a cat, if you're a cat person.
There's always pet bunnies too, they're pretty cuddly, and not to expensive.
Or at least, I don't think they are, anyways

Ah, I should mention. We can't have dogs where we live. So when I say small like, non cat or dog. Something that can live in a cage if need be.

Lizzie your Guinea Pig is adorable!

Apparently bunnies are quite affectionate if raised right. I would also say the same about hamsters. My now deceased hamster Hamsy used to like to sleep in my pocket(Or down my shirt ) while I read a book or something. Rats are also supposed to be very affectionate.

Some small lizards are actually quite cuddly. My friend has a lizard and she loves to sit in people's hands or cling to you. Quite cute if you like reptiles.

Bunnies aren't actually that cuddley. There are some that are, and there are some that aren't, and then there are some that will let you sit on the floor next to you and snuggle, but only on their terms. They are lovely animals to live with, but they are a big commitment (living 8+years!!) I'd say rats are pretty cuddley, having rat-sitted for a few weeks.

You can cuddle my 4 guinea pigs for hours without them making a fuss... they do like to be kept in groups though 2 - 4

For a 2 yr old leopard gecko. Dont get hactlins they are hard to keep... but the older ones like the cuddles and running up and down ur arms lol

Good luck in your search.

Yep they love their cuddles. But as I said they like to be with another one or in a group. Do not get males with females as you would have to get two different cages. As the females hips can be broken during mating if left to a old age. thats why we only have 4 females

Re: Cuddly pets? - July 20th 2009, 01:07 AM

Thanks mates. Guinea Pigs seems to be the number one choice here, I don't know if I should get something so small because I'm afraid of the ferrets sneaking into the cage to uh..play or trying to get at them during free run time. Maybe a bunny then, one that will grow to be larger.
No lizards, I entertained the idea once. But I really don't like them. I'm terrified of the smaller lizards, which also happen to be abundant where I live.

Ferrets are quite crafty so just keep the rodents cage at a high place where they can't see it. Ferrets are sometimes known to harm or even kill rodents and small rabbits (and even large rabbits). Don't ever let them out at the same time. ^^; Guinea Pigs are nice as long as you let them get use to you at a young age. They live for about 3-4 years too. Rabbits are lovely and can be high maintenance (at times). Make sure you have the time to invest in them.

Hey, if you go with a guinea pig the you should look at this website ( guineapigcages.com) That shows the type of cage the guinea pig should have and they are actually easy to make. As for keeping your ferret out, they have forums on the site (be careful the people can be rough) and they might be able to help you out. But, one way is by making a lid for the cage and then putting a specific wiring on it too. I can't remember.

Also, you should consider going to a shelter/rescue to get the animal because pet stores ofter mis-sex, send home pregnant piggies, or send home sick piggies.

I hope this helped and good luck with the new pet when you get it.

Rats...I used to have two, both males. One of them was about the closest thing to the love of my life, lol he used to sit on my shoulder and give me kisses and the other one was loving, but i didnt pick him out so he wasn't very cuddly...lol usually it takes a few minutes at the petshop to pick out the right one

I've had all kinds of smaller pets - hedgehogs and hamsters and guinea pigs. All were content to sit with me, but on "cuddle" scale, I'd probably say the guinea pigs. They love anyone who will sit and just spend time holding them.
