My dogs dew clawed is almost completely snapped off.. - August 22nd 2009, 11:24 AM

My boxer dog had to be washed down with the hose yesterday because when she was loose in a field she rolled in either a dead rabbit or garbage. She smelled so bad and the smell is still on her. I already put some vinegar on her coat but that never worked. Does anyone know anything that gets rid of bad smells off of a dog?

My main concern is that while we were trying to wash her she saw the hose come and and bolted off of the back patio. I don't know if this is what caused her injury or not because I didn't notice it at that time and she wasn't picking at it like she was at around 6 last night. What happened is her dew claw was snapped off and just hanging there. Only a quarter of it is left because I had to gently pull the rest of it off. It was causing her a lot of discomfort and she was trying to nip at her leg and that's when I first noticed it. So i don't exactly know if the accident occured on the patio or if she did something else to snap it. Well now her quick or the meat that was supposed to be in her nail looks like it's hanging out. It was dripping some fluid onto the floor and I had to clean that up with a towel.

Does anyone know what I should do to help my dog and to prevent infection? I don't want to hurt her and my parents won't let her see a vet because we can't afford the visit right now with paying for my brothers college fees and for his car problems. Star can only walk a couple steps without laying down and licking that foot and I'm really concerned. The claw looks really nasty and my main concern is if it gets infected, then what? So does anyone know of any solutions to help my dog?

Thanks I bandaged it up so at least now she can't pull at it and I bought a new collar to replace the one that had the garbage smell all over it.

i hate dew claws, all my dogs had them removed (one as an adult) but thts cos i race mine, all i can suggest is to bathe it with salt water or hibiscrub (i think thts what its called) its used by surgeons to wash their hands etc and we have used it on cuts in the past, on a daily basis and keep it bandaged until you can see a vet.

oh and i heard tomato ketchup is good for getting rid of bad smells ... i've never tried it so i dont know if it does actually work or not, just what people at racing have said.
