Question A very sad goldfish... - February 26th 2010, 08:18 PM

I went to the pet store a few days ago and decided that I wanted a goldfish. So I took one home (whose name is Bill, by the way) and put him in a fish bowl with some gravel. He seems extremely upset, though. (My parents claim that goldfish don't have feelings, but I disagree...)

He sits on the bottom of the bowl all day and doesn't eat. I know he's not dead, by the way, because I can see him breathing and opening his mouth. He moves around on occasion when I startle him, too. Can he be sad? Am I doing something wrong? lol

This seems so ridiculous, since he's a 29 cent goldfish, but I love the little guy. Any suggestions..?

Lol, don't mean to burst your bubble but goldfish has a horrible memory span due to a small cerebral cortex. =P I have like... maybe 7 goldfish in a tank by my bed. My boyfriend always says the fish are hungry. They're always hungry hungry hungry! Lol. Just because they eat the food we give them. I don't think your goldfish is sad =)

I've heard goldfish need one of those bubble maker things for the tank. Buy another small tank that makes bubbles. They can only live so long.

thats a myth, it's actually been proven wrong now. but i can see why people think that.

as for the issue with the goldfish, yh putting a goldfish in a tiny bowl isn't realy the best way to keep him, and if he's on his own he may feel lonely. goldfish need a filter in there tank to keep the water moving. he may be stressed out which could cause a illness.

the only way to really help him is to put him in a larger tank and buy him a friend.and get him a filter. it's either that or you have bought a diseased fish. but sounds to me like he's just stressed out.

Yeah. I'd put your fishy in a big tank with cool fishy houses, and weeds and stuff. And get him some fishy friends to keep him company =]

Also, keep in mind that he might just need time to get used to you =).

Also, take a look at my post in Ceilidh's goldfish thread :

Sorry for my laziness, but its 4:12am here and I can't be bothered to type it all up again or copy/paste.

Well make sure you are using water conditioner =) if you already know that stuff you might want to check you amonia levels, they spike really fast in new set up and REALLY fast in small tanks/bowls. If you can't check your levels you might want to do a 25%-50% water change. Signs of amonia in your tank are inactive fish at the bottom of the tank usually gasping for air and maybe changes in color (either paler or darker). Its a common thing especially in new tanks and ESPECIALLY with goldfish in small tanks. Good luck!!! =D
