I'm getting a goldfish again :D -

I had two a few years ago but they both died
 I've bugged my dad enough to get me a new one (I'm like a child  ) I smoke in my bedroom (normally with the window open) and I'm wondering would it hurt the goldfish as the smoke may get in the water? I've always had them in my living room but this time the fish will be in my room.

Hmmmmm, Well I know that Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere dissolves into our oceans - but I don't know if the same rule would appliy to 'smoking' and 'Fish tanks' - I would think it might....
Make sure you get one of those bubble makers so that fresh oxygen is constantly pumped into the tank!! And make sure you lean out the window (Not too far though  )

I don't know what to name it. I'm thinking Bryn (as in uncle Bryn from Gavin & Stacey) I like welsh names for pets =)) or Buddy (Eddie's fish from friends

Hehe, sounds cute ^_^.
As for the smoke thing, as long as you don't exhale towards the tank, it'll probably be fine, and even then, it probably won't harm the fish unless you keep doing so...which I'm going to assume you're not .

Remember, try for about 20 gallons(or 75 litres) of water per fish., since goldfish do defecate enough to foul up their water quite a bit. Also, try to give the water as much surface area as possible, since this affects the rate at which the water takes in oxygen from the air. Wikipedia says about a foot of surface area for every inch of fish. A filter can reduce both these figures though. Goldfish can actually live for about 10 years with ideal care, but not in your classic fishbowl, since they don't have enough space, and the water turns toxic with their own waste very quickly.
Interesting fact though, apparantly the whole 3 second memory thing is a myth and they actually have fairly decent memories and brains in general for fish, and can be trained to navigate mazes and stuff. So if you ever get bored, train your fish to navigate a maze .
