Anyone else have a hedgehog? XD totally posting pictures too.

So yesterday I just got a hedgehog, something I've been researching for a long, long time now. I've long since decided to name him Ppunk. The first P is silent. Or the second. It really depends on my mood.

For anyone wondering or wanting a hedgehog, I suggest researching them a lot because they're not like. well, a hamster. I'm a rather experienced pet owner, so the little guy is nothing for me. But they're very, very shy little critters and if you don't work them right, they'll never warm up to you. Which means when you do try to pick them up, they curl up in a little pointy ball or bite you. Which tends to make people feel really bad about it all... Not to mention, apparently to everyone but me, the little spines do hurt. They're nothing for me though... Very pain tolerant I guess

When I was at the store there were definitly cooler looking ones with cuter faces, but this guy was running all over the place and so curious about everything Not very flinchy, since all the others were curled up in a ball the whole time. (probably because the stupid store put them right next to the barking puppies in tiny cages ) So really, personality is better than looks when it comes to pets. If you want something pretty to look at, buy a painting

Anyways. I wanna upload pictures too cause I'm totally actually somewhat excited about this. lol

I was sitting straight up. He was trying to crawl up my shirt. Trying, and failing.





So for Valentines day, I got two little stuffed hedgehogs since as I said I've been researching this for awhile. (yeah, those are supposed to be hedgehogs) The small one is from my friend, the big one from my parents. Surprising yes, but my parents actually got me something.
The joke is, that if my friend got me a small stuffed hedgehog, and my parents got me a big stuffed hedgehog, then my boyfriend should have AT LEAST gotten me a REAL one!! lol we didn't do Valentines day though. lol

He and my dog hugo staring at eachother. lol it was adorable. (yes, it's a multi level cage. And yes, theres nothing on that level except his little treats dish. lol all his cool stuff is further down)
For anyone worried about the fact that I have two dogs, no worries. One of them hardly gives a crap, the other one I'm watching carefully with like, 3 extra precautions taken to make the cage safe. Plus, I cant get up the stairs or into another room without my dogs following... So I don't think we've anything to worry about. Neither does Punk obviously.

See, thats why I love the guy He sniffs right back, then ignores the big black thing staring at him for hours on end. The other hedgies would curled up in a ball...

I'd love an APH but I don't have enough room for one, since contrary to belief they need a fair amount of room.
And just a word or warning, multi level cages really aren't that good especially since yours looks fairly high :/

A lot of people will tell you different things when it comes to... well a lot of hedgehog stuff. They're recently domesticated, so there isn't too much of a 'norm' yet for them. Most though have the basics at least, food bowl, water bowl or bottle, wheel, bed, and some toys. The only thing that seems to be agreed upon cage wise is that you should never get a wire bottom cage cause their feet will get stuck and they'll break their leg
But, I've seen a few people just put all this stuff in a big plastic bin. lol I got a multi level cage cause I have seen these guys like to burrow, so I wanted him to feel like he's further down, but I've also seen and heard a few like to climb which is weird. especially this guy. lol so instead of them trying to crawl up the sides and fall, I figured that getting some ramps would hopefully not make them want to even try climbing up sides. I think it's working since he was trying to crawl up the walls at the pet store and hasn't here

There is actually hedgehog food made, but really, it's cat food. And he eats that fine. They'll also eat a lot of vegetables, and insects like crickets or mealworms. (which, thanks to my frog and gecko, I already have. lol) In my zoology class, hedgehogs were classified as insectivores, but they obviously eat other stuff too. I try to mix it up though for a healthy diet. There are a few things they can’t have, like grapes and whatnot.

The hardest part about hedgehogs though, is that as I've mentioned earlier, they're kinda new to the whole, being a pet thing. So pretty much all of them are really shy around people unless you're really careful getting them used to you. I mean, they're not like a dog. They're not gonna run up to you and start licking your face immediately. Not to mention, to apparently everyone but me, they hurt trying to pick them up. lol they tend to flinch if you touch them (until of course, they get to know you) which kinda causes the quills to hit your hand and all that junk.

And it is a rather small dog making the cage look taller Not really small, not like a lapdog (though he thinks he is) but he's not a big one either. Neither him nor the cage come up to my hip, and I'm really rather short >.>
Plus, especially once summer comes around and my dogs are out in the yard and mini pool all day long, this little guy will have the whole basement to run around in lol (in a ball of course. I don't want him getting himself lost somewhere. lol cause he's definitely the curious kind who would.)

It depends on the person if they can hold one or not to be honest... My mom, friend, and my friend's mom each tried to hold him with no luck at the petstore. Even the pet store helper lady had to use her shirt sleeve to pick him up.

But me? It doesn't bother me in the least, not even when he flinches or when one of them bit me. But, I think I have a much higher pain tolerance than most people. So that might explain it.. (then again, my mom and friend and my friends mom, they all have a very LOW pain tolerance soo... like seriously, my friend will hit me when we're messing around and literally say "ow" at hitting me...)

And technically, by law, you can't cause you live in California They're illegal in some states including California and Georgia. But, I've met people online in California who still have them as pets. I mean, it's just a little hedgehog. They might get a $20 fine but if the police are searching out their house and find it, they've got bigger problems.
