London, Paris and Lyon (Leo)! - *Img Heavy* - July 5th 2010, 02:26 PM

I posted some pictures a while back of my girls, but decided to post some more along with my most recent addition, Lyon, who prefers to be called Leo. I eventually plan on moving him in with the girls, but I'm going to need to do quite a bit of work with him before I reach that point. He needs to be socialised not only with people but with other rats, as well, so introductions have been slow. I'm confident I can work with him, however, as I rehabilited the girls.

Both were neglected in their previous home - caged and fed improperly and deprived of human contact. =/ London was a nipper and fear aggressive. These days, they couldn't be friendlier. I'm still their security blanket and they're still cautious of new people, but they accompany me practically everywhere and boggle and brux plenty (a rat's equivelant of a dog's tail wag or a cat's purr). They're also very, very cuddly - Paris, especially - which is odd as their level of "cuddliness," so to speak, is not typical for a female rat's general temperament.

BUT ANYWAY, on to the pictures!

London and Paris (Himilayan twins) --

And Leo (Mink, almost a self, but he has a white heart marking on his chest - I'll try and get a picture of it for TH - and a white belly spot... so not sure what that'd classify as)! I don't have as many pictures of him, as he's still camera shy.

Woah, Some of those pictures are proper cuute

You know, I never ever knew you could rehabilitate a rat! I'm stunned! Sounds like your doing a great job though!!

I'm still alive.
Must have been a miracle
It's been one hell of a ride
Destination still unkown

You better walk the line or you'll be left for dead.

I'm a runaway train on a broken track
I'm the ticker on the bomb that you can't turn back
Thats right.
I got away with it all and I'm still alive.
Let the end of the world come tumbling down.
I'll be the last man standing on the ground
As long as hot blood runs through my veins
I'm still alive.

rats are known known for carrying diseases and being in sewers.
but you made a change there. the pictures freaky me out though.
its brave to take care of an unusual pet,i wouldnt last a day with a rat,i think,im sure...
and the comments were complimenting than critical. just saying.

Claire - Some rats can't be rehabilitated. It honestly depends. They're as smart as dogs, and as far as rehabilitation goes, they work in the same way. Like some dogs are aggressive beyond the point of rehabilitation, it's the same with rats. Luckily, mine have made, and continue to make, progress.

Natasha - That's actually why a lot of people dislike rats! It's the image they've been given from sewer rats and such... although a lot of people also dislike them for their tails. But rats are actually as clean as cats. My rats are constantly grooming themselves and only need a bath every so often to get extra squeaky (no pun intended) clean.

Jemicalleo - Hehe. Only 3!

So cute. My friend had baby rats but I moved away before they grew. These are gorgeous.

Out of interest, how do you carry them around with you everywhere you go?

Wow. It's been ages since I checked the pet forum. I didn't think my thread on rats would get so many responses!

But I have a bonding pouch. It's basically a fleece pouch that I hang around my neck, and they sit inside it (occasionally popping their heads out), or if I'm wearing a sweatshirt, they go inside the front pocket and hood. We obviously avoid grocery stores, restaurants and pet stores, but if I'm running errands or taking a walk at the beach or at our local natural park, then they'll come with.

Haha, you have no idea. I spend quite a bit of my allowance spoiling them... many times putting their wants before my needs. It's insane, but it brings them so much joy that I enjoy doing it.

Ruth, thank you. Their cage is now set up differently.

It was pirate themed:

But now it's pink themed again, just with new hammocks:

And now it's Leo's who's pirate themed:

You should share pictures of your ratties with me.

And some more, because I can:

Aww, Alex. If you lived in California nearer by, you could share mine! I always feel so bad when I'm off at college. They miss a couple days of interaction and being able to go out. But they're my absolute babies.

But who's to say you won't have them in the future? They're great pets when you do have the time and they're well worth the wait; I had to wait over a year before I could get a pair.

What are those things hanging from the top of the cages?

Awwwwww, that's the cutest thing I've ever seen especially where there's one curled up in the bowl.

I can't wait til I get my own house/flat/whatever I'd love some rats but right now I'm making do with a hamster since that's the only rodent my mum will let me have

The things hanging from the tops of their cages are hammocks.

And aww, Cara. Like I said, they're well worth the wait! And hamsters are adorable, though I've never owned one.

I've been looking into getting rats or guinea pigs. I want to do it right though and so have been doing massive research on the guinea pigs but haven't gotten any info on rats yet.

I had a friend that had a rat and it was awesome. It ended up dying a week or two after she got it though which was sad.

So here are some questions I have.

Where do you get your rats from?
What kind of cage do they need? Like size etc.
What kind of food
And anything else you can think of to tell me :P

Seriously I have a lot of questions but I have been up for quite a while and am tired

And, I think they are adorable little critters. I will admit they sometimes give me the creeps but I remember my friends rat and can totally get passed it.

I know they are actually sweet critters.

There could never be amore beautiful you

You were made tofill a purposethat only you could do
So there could never be amore beautiful you
-Johnny Diaz

Everyday
is so wonderful
And suddenly it's hard to breathe
Now and then I get insecure
From all the pain, I feel so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Tryin' hard to fill the emptiness, the piece is gone
Left the puzzle undone, ain't that the way it is?

'Cause you are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down, oh no
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh no
So don't you bring me down today

See if that helps answer your questions, any. If it doesn't, do feel free to either PM me or post here! I'm an open book when it comes to rats.
