Bearded Dragons? - September 7th 2010, 09:07 AM

I am thinking of adding a bearded dragon to the pets in my house

Has anyone here have or had one in the past?

What can you tell me about them? While I've had almost everyother pet in the past, I am a complete newb when it comes to lizards.

Look a rattata!!!!

Firstly, you should know what you're getting into. They live for 8-10 years, so it's not a temporary investment like rodents.

Investment, that's the other big word. Beardies need a varied diet, a 4ft vivarium for a single adult, heating systems, which include, say a ceramic heater with a thermostat plus a UV tube, plus a starter. So there's that massive investment which is around £250 here, which is around $384.22 , according to google, and that's not including the animal itself. There's also vivarium decor, a basking spot, a hide, rocks etc. for the beardy to amuse itself with, as well as the sandy substrate.

You'll also need to find a source for live insects, which make up 80% of it's diet, the other 20% being fruit and vegetables.

Make sure you and your family are okay with all of this, plus the electricity bills before you get a bearded dragon, since it's not really fair on the lizard if you can't provide for it's needs.

If you're still all okay with it, then take a look at this:
http://www.thereptilian.co.uk/care_s..._vitticeps.htm

That'll give you all the basic information you need. Remember, with exotic pets especially, do your research, and don't trust the pet shop overly, they're often a tad uneducated.

All of that said, Bearded Dragons are awesome pets, they're so chilled and interactive, plus they're really cute ^^.
