My dog's scared of fireworks :( -
November 1st 2010, 12:56 PM
Not my puppy, my older dog, Charlie. He's terrified of them. My dad took him out for a small walk last night and a firework went off, Charlie ran in and hid in the bathroom shaking
He was there for about an hour. I was stroking and hugging him but he was still scared ![]() Is there anyway I could help him? :/ I know he's a dog so there's not much I can do I just hate him being scared With bonfire night coming up he'll be worse

I don't think there's anything you can do. My boyfriend's dog is afraid of all loud noises. My dad had a dog when he was younger that was so scared of thunder that she had to be given a sedative every time there was a storm.

There was nothing we could do with my old dog. She was afraid of fireworks from when she was a puppy to when she was 11 years old, when she died. We tried comforting her, putting her in certain rooms, distracting her. It got a little bit better, but she was never entirely comfortable.

my dog was scared of the vacuum cleaner and storms.
this new puppy i've got is now afraid of bigger dogs and Canaries. so yeah, every dog has a phobia, like we do from heights, spiders, talking sandwiches etc. the only thing you can do is keep him inside of the house and make sure he hears nothing. or take him out, step by step he'll get used to it like an everyday activity. i read in an article that dogs can overcome their fears, some can get over it faster than we do. depends on the race. no big magic trick. is there such a thing as a pet psychiatrist? i think there are some in the adoption centers(DON'T take my word for it). you can ask for some advice from them. ![]() |

There's been an advert on the TV about a plug in thing that helps calm cats and dogs. I think it's called 'Dap' or something along those lines, maybe look at getting one of those?

Try to just ignore it, fussing over him will reinforce the fear. Act like there is nothing to be afraid of and he will eventually get over it. Distracting him is better than
Dap is known to work and my Auntie gets sedatives for her dog on bonfire night and new years, both of these cost money. Also with Dap you need to plug it in a week before the fireworks for best results so it may be a little late now. http://www.doggiesolutions.co.uk/d-a...one-497-0.html Also playing nature sounds on your computer quite loud might help calm them and drown out the fireworks. For the future and long term results You can get a CD of firework noises which you can play all year round and random times to get him used to the noises. |

I think that;s completely normal for dogs, not all dogs though.. One of my dog is terrified whenever I vacuum. But again, I really don't think there's much to do anything about it..

My dog dosen't like them either. Just keep it indoors or somewhere where it can't escape. And don't make a big fuss cause that makes it worse.

My dog is terrifyed of fireworks and loud noises. So when bonfire night comes along we give him these pills that the vet gave us. It basically calms him down.. I guess its kind of like a doggy drug.
He doesn't react to the fireworks but he seems drousy at times. They're not too cheap though... but if it is really bothering you, maybe take him to the vet and they can give him an immediate injection on the bonfire night.. or they can give you the pills in advance <3
