New Parakeets! - October 8th 2011, 05:07 AM

So today I just got two new blue parakeets! So far they're really quiet and calm but they're probably pretty scared right now

Any ideas on names? And any tips you have for pet birds would be appreciated too

Re: New Parakeets! - October 8th 2011, 08:05 PM

They're so cute!! I love parakeets.

As for tips...I don't know if you have read about how to care for them or train them or anything, so I'll tell you what I know from having a parakeet myself. When I first got mine, the guy in the pet shop said that if you get one, it'll bond with you, so you want to focus a lot on training it; and if you get two, they'll bond with each other.

I'm not sure how big the cage you have is, and if it's small, you may want to consider having them fly free occasionally. With my parakeet, we had a "bird tree" (basically a bunch of sticks tied together over a flowerpot--to catch the droppings) that he flew to when we let him out of the cage. A word of caution, though, if you do decide to let him fly free, you'll have to be really careful and bird-proof the house. Definitely read about it before trying it, because it can be dangerous if you aren't careful.

Parakeets love to have toys like mirrors and bells and things to chew on (you can probably find some at a pet shop). Just take it slow if you add things to their cage. Parakeets are extremely wary of anything new, so it may freak them out at first.

Also, they like to chew of cuttlefish bones (it's a dietary supplement), and millet sprays are a treat for them. You can use them as a reward for training, or just if you want to give your birds something yummy to eat.

Good luck with your parakeets, and keep me posted

Re: New Parakeets! - October 8th 2011, 10:21 PM

Awe adorable! They look exactly like the one my neighbor used to have. I have one, but he's green. Here's a picture:

Names, no clue. Haha. My last bird was named Libby, because my mom liked the name or something. My parakeet now is named Baby, because that's what we call him the most & what we called our other bird a lot.

Some tips:
-Don't take them out of the cage until you've had them for a week so they can adjust
-You may even want to take them out separately for now, because parakeets ignore you if they have someone else with them
-I know my parakeet & the other parakeet I used to have love the water (not being in it, but hearing it)
-Don't give them any mirrored toys for a while because it makes them ignore you
-Clip their wings if they start to fly too much (I guess you don't have to, but my bird tries to escape if I don't )

That's about it for now. I'll add more if I can think of any later. Have fun with your parakeets!

Thanks guys, so far they seem to be getting more used to their new home. They're chirping a bit and their personalities are already coming out

They're so cute. They look like the one I used to have.

Blueberry, for a name?

Mine did too! He would chirp at the top of his lungs whenever someone was doing the dishes . That reminded me that he also liked taking "baths" sometimes. He wouldn't actually get in his tub, but he would stand on the edge and flick water onto himself.

Haha mine won't even touch the water, but he definitely likes hearing it.

Yeah I do feel bad about it, but I'm making sure they have plenty of room and I refuse to clip their wings. They are birds after all, they should be able to fly.

Just make sure they can't fly anywhere high up or outside! Haha when we first got my bird, his wings weren't clipped & he flew all over the house & it took forever to catch him.

Also, be careful about windows, since they can fly into them, thinking there's nothing there. What we did is kept the blinds down, and raise them a bit each week, so my bird knew there was something there.

Yeah I have my blinds down and always keep my door shut. I haven't tried taking them out yet though because they're still getting used to my room. My mum is worried that if I let them out they'll go to the bathroom all over

I made a "bird tree" with a bunch of sticks tied together and put that over a big flowerpot, which caught my bird's poop. He spent most of his time there when he was out of his cage.

I have two birds like them too. My advice, keep the cage closed. My last bird got out and flew away, but then I got another bird. Make sure they have food and water at all times.

Yeah the cage has the kind of doors where they will be closed unless you pull them up to open them. And I change the water twice a day and the food dish is always got food in it
