Ruturning to old habits :( - July 9th 2012, 09:59 AM

I was so proud of myself, 1 month free of cuts and bruises. The last 2 years I have been cutting and brusing myself. I hated to so I decided I was going to stop, I have been exersising screaming listering to music and distracting myself from the self harm. I managed to not cut/bruise since the 12th of june. Last night I cut again, Bad too. I feel so bad but I tried the alternative methods and distractions but they didnt help, Im afraid that Im going to fall back into a routine of selfharm and I dont want to.Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can do to prevent it...

Well first of all, welcome to TeenHelp!

A whole month self-harm free is amazing! It's a good thing that you've been trying so hard to stop. Don't be too hard on yourself for one slip up; that doesn't mean you're going to get back into the habit. Like so many others have said, slip ups are part of recovery. Also, not all the alternatives work for everyone; you might need to try some others until you find alternatives that DO work for you. Check out this link for a list of alternatives: http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f12-s...ves-self-harm/ . You might even find that different alternatives work better for different triggers that make you want to hurt yourself. And depending on if you've told anyone (a friend, family member, therapist, or someone else you trust), maybe you could try to talk to them about your feelings whenever you have the urge to self-harm. If not, I strongly suggest that you talk to someone about this.

Good luck and stay strong! We're always here for you. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk.

Hey there,

What you're experiencing is a relapse, It happens to a lot of people who are trying to stop self harming, me included, like Tigereyes said, you should be incredibly proud of yourself for staying self harm free, and it shows that you can do it again. Don't get discouraged because you had one bad day! Pick yourself back up and try again.

Like said above, alternatives are a great way to stop, and sometimes some of our urges are a little stronger than others, but that doesn't mean they don't always work. You said that they'd been helping, so keep on doing them, while exploring some new ones. The thread that she posted is a great way to start, just go down the list and try to find a few new ones that you think might work, don't get discouraged if they don't, just keep trying!

Talking to someone you trust about it is a great idea too, it's good to have a support system to be there for you when you need it. It really does make everything a whole lot easier, so you should think about it. You could tell a teacher, counselor, friend or a family member, it might be scary at first, but it really is worth it in the end! So just think about it at least.

Things might be tough now, but you're doing a great job, just keep going! We're all here for you if you ever need us! And if you ever need anyone to talk to, feel free to message me! Good luck and take care!
