Arrow Carving words or pictures? - July 21st 2012, 08:09 AM

So, some people cut the words 'Fat' or 'Fuck on themselves, or hearts or stars.
I want to do this, so can someone tell me from experience if theyve ever done it and details etc...
if you dont mind me asking.

How about a star on my hip?

Re: Carving words or pictures? - July 21st 2012, 08:17 AM

I have carved both words and patterns in the past. All have faded. Due to the need to be more precise - requiring greater fine motor control - cuts are usually not very deep. Therefore, over time they heal more completely than scars from other cuts might.

As a general piece of advice, don't do it. People will SEE the scars at some point, and their reaction to more "tasteful" self-harm is generally the same as their reaction to other self-harm.

If you want a tattoo, save up some money, and get a tattoo.

Wiki "scarification", it's a wiki about intentionally scarring the skin.

Also, there is a very high risk of infection with this type of self-harm, as you are (generally) repeatedly using the same blade/needle/whatever, and it's unlikely that you, on your own, follow the stringent hygiene procedures observed by professionals such as tattoo artists.

So, yes, I've done it. I definitely do NOT recommend it, and think that if you are after a permanent image, then you should get tattooed. Professionally.

And please remember, even if you do go through with something like this, it's incredibly unlikely to come out as you imagined.

Actually, in my religion, i cant get a tattoo, so...
Anyways, i dont see the medical difference between carving and cutting. Ive cut before, so i know the risks, but ive never gotten an infection.

Infection is not a matter of "if," it's a matter of "when."

Even wounds that are properly taken care of can still contract serious, possibly life threatening, infections. This is possible with any wound, but it's more likely to happen with deeper wounds that take longer to heal. Inactive bacteria are present at all times, on surfaces and in the air. All it takes is for them to reach the right environment - a warm, moist and healing wound, for example - before the can settle in and produce potentially fatal bacterial infections.

I'm talking about things like staphylococcus and MRSA. They are highly contagious and can lead to hospitalization or even death if not caught and treated quickly enough. In a few extreme cases, people have lost limbs. Not to mention, both of those bacterial strains don't necessarily go away with antibiotics. They can settle and lie dormant in your system, where they can spread at anytime.

There is a difference between self-harm and scarification. Self-harm is inflicting damage upon oneself, often out of emotional need, while scarification is the process of applying artistic design to the body through carving. In many cases, scarification has ritualistic significance.

Well we don't know that unless you inform us.

Also, it's not the depth of the wound. Big or small, infection can happen to anyone.

However, I respect and understand your choice. I've been there. I've been in a place where I was happy with self-harm and had no intention of stopping, which is where you seem to be. I just urge you to be careful with what you are doing and take care of yourself, that's all. If you're going to scar yourself with a pattern it often takes more care because there is a more open surface area, so that's why I mentioned infection.

Re: Carving words or pictures? - July 22nd 2012, 02:48 PM

I carved "Fat bitch" into my right hip.
Don't do it.
the cuts aren't usualy very deep, so they fade quickly. It doesn't guve the same relief as my usual self-harm, which makes it completely useless. It's really hard to get the letters to look right... especially the "i" "c" and "h" . its just not worth it in any way.
yeah, not a good idea. I mean, self harm in general is a bad idea, but this especially is a bad idea.

I wanna fly. So I do gymnastics instead.

I'll just keep holding on to what i believe and oh I believe in you. Give me the strength for the fight and the heart to believe cause I've got to believe in you. I feel so alive.

As you posted this in the SH forum, I would like to ask you a question- are you doing this because you want to hurt yourself or want damage done to your body, or are you doing this just because you want a star-shaped scar? Because if you're doing this to hurt yourself the only advice you're going to get from us is not to do that. I highly recommend not doing that because like an above poster said it could get infected no matter how deep, and if you're doing this to harm yourself it is a very damaging thing like any other addiction.

I sometimes do shapes but I use a safety pin so if they do scar its very faint. Never thought of words, maybe I'll try

I want it for both. I enjoy the pain, and would like something other than simple lines down my arm.

As you want this partly for the pain we are not allowed to give you advice on how to harm yourself, and even if we were I think very few people on here, if anyone, would give you tips on how to intentionally cause damage to your body.
What I will tell you is that you need to stop. I know you may not want to, but this is a dangerous addiction that can take over your entire life. I suggest you take a look at the "Alternatives" thread. It's important that you stop because this not only damages your body, but can go into a downward spiral- it'll just get worse and worse. Please try to stop. I also recommend you talk to someone as to why you do this to yourself- a counselor, trusted adult, anyone.

Hey there,

I'm sorry you feel like you need to do this, for emotional reasons or whatever, self harm or sacrification is never the right thing to do, there's always alternatives. I've carved words into my legs, but it was the heat of the moment, not premeditated. I'm just going to give my honest opinion okay, I don't want it to sound rude or like I'm preaching, but here goes. I don't like the idea of carving pictures onto your body, it's almost like glorifying self harm, it's not something to show off to people, it's often signs of someone's internal struggle. Hurting yourself is what self harm is, if you take away the idea that it's a bad thing, you'll never be able to help yourself get better. Please stay strong.

Honestly, I'm not going to give you advice on how to harm yourself, and I hope no one else does either. Self-harm is serious and can turn into an out of control addiction, trust me, I know.

....I know its wrong to self harm, and you are all telling me it will turn into an addiction, but its too late for that; im already addicted.
Ive looked at the alternatives. None of them help.

I've carved a heart on the upper side of my wrist, and I also have a tattoo above it which says; "Cherish your life." Now, this scar is a scarification.. A scar 'tattoo' made by myself, so it fits the tattoo above. (The scar was made before the tattoo, so I didn't know I'd have that text above it when I did it.)

My advice, get a professional tattoo.

I'm not one for judging people UnicornGurl but your comments worry me.

There are other ways of dealing with self harm than trying to make it pretty and a form of art.

With all types of self harm there is the risk of infection and blood loss that can both result in death. I don't mean to scare you but that's reality. I once had a self harm cut get infected and needed antibiotics to save my hand.

The best thing you can do is speak to a councillor. What you say to them is kept completely confidential and they can offer you piece of mind.

Through my experiences of being a peer mentor I've helped people with self harm and an effective way of dealing with it is getting a colouring book and pencils and colouring the pictures in. The process distracts the mind and produces something artistic and productive.

I'm not a degree qualified professional and I'm not going to boss you around but I will wish you all the best in beating self harm. I know how difficult it is.

Hope I've helped a little
