Why do people cut their wrists/arms? - July 19th 2013, 11:41 PM

Genuine question, why is it that so many people self harm on their wrists if they don't want to kill themselves? It's just an easy place for people to notice :|

It's also one of the easiest places to access, and unless you're thinking clearly enough at the time to consider having to hide them later, you probably don't even think about it.

Personally some of it was easy access, but mostly that the skin is less tough and the closer to the hands the more nerve endings. I always hid mine, and was deathly scared of anyone finding out that I self harmed.

Ah, I suppose. If I cut/bruise myself I tend to do it on my legs because it's not noticeable and I could easily say I walked into a table or something.

I agree that it's mainly an ease of access sort of thing. I've stopped self harming on my wrists/arms but in the moment sometimes people don't think of the risks involved or don't think they are going to self harm deep enough to do any serious damage, then they figure out ways to hide it later whether it be long sleeves or a lot of bracelets.

Honestly? Because when you're or rather, when I have been in a state where I self harm, I don't even have any thought about where is best to cut so that people won't see. All I am thinking is I need to cut so yes, now my arms are wrecked and so are my legs but when you're in such a state, I don't have rational thinking like that and I don't think many other people do too.

Not all people self-harm on their wrists, some do it on their legs or other areas as self-harm in general is an expression of pain.

Thats an interesting question, as other people have said its ease of access, however as sarah said people self harm in a variety of places and not just on their arms or wrists.

For some weird reason I 'preferred' to cut on my arms. It felt the best for me.

This is only from my experience, but different areas "feel" different. I prefer my arms or my lower legs. I also had excuses everyone believed for my arms.

I automatically do it on my legs for some reason, maybe I'm just an odd one.

When I used to do it I always preferred to do it on my wrists since it felt better than other places. I tried to do it in places nobody would see usually but if I could get away with it on my wrists without it being noticed (e.g it was winter and I would be wearing long sleeves a lot) then that would be the first place I thought of.

Wow okay I'm glad I'm not the only one who has places they find "feels better" to cut. When I would self harm it would usually be on my arm or my thighs because that's just where I liked cutting. I only cut my arm during winter and now that it's summer I'm stuck with the ramifications. Especially since I do not scar well at all. I hate when other people ask about it but I think I'd feel a part of me is missing if I didn't have those scars. I don't know.

I don't know any scientific reasons, so I can only answer from personal experience. For me, it was an ease of access thing, as well as being easy to pass off if somebody noticed - I could easily blame a pet, a tree branch, a fence, etc. It was also, as the others said, because it (sometimes) feels better there. I used to get urges to do it in specific spots, usually places I'd cut before, which included my wrist. Finally, I kind of liked having it in a visible place so that it could serve as a reminder. I won't go into too much detail about that, but basically I wanted to be able to see it so that I could remember what I'd done. If that makes any sense at all.

I agree, I don't think there is a real scientific answer to why people do it there. And odds are, there's even more reasons people do it on their arms and wrists than mentioned here. For me, I've had lots of reasons. At first, it was just because my arms were there. I didn't care really where I did it, but my arms were easiest to access, and I liked seeing the cuts there, and I just preferred my arms. I still do, but now I only self harm my arms or wrists when I KNOW I can hide it. However, it isn't that easy for me to do anymore. It used to be just wearing a sweatshirt all of the time, or bracelets, or lying about how the mark got there. Sometimes I wouldn't even lie. Or try to hide them. I liked the scars and cuts on my arms to be honest.
....lots of people are going to have different answers. That's just my story I guess

Well it's like a coping mechanism. If you're feeling like crap it distracts you from the emotional pain and releases a hormone that makes you feel better. Or if you feel emotionally numb or useless it makes you feel alive or like you are aware I guess. That's the best way I can describe it.

As others have said, it's probably an ease of access thing more than anything. I know taht when I did it on my wrists it was easier and it did feel better, I guess I wasn't really think about having to hide them etc

Re: Why do people cut their wrists/arms? - July 26th 2013, 09:37 PM

I started out on my arms/wrists cuz it is readily available for cutting. I didn't think about having to hide it. Now that I've been doing it for a few years I've found places to do it that won't show. Like hip ones, rear end, under side of breasts. Another reason is that the skin on the under side of arms is sensitive and easier to cut. Hope that helps.

Re: Why do people cut their wrists/arms? - July 27th 2013, 12:54 AM

Very specifically your question asked about cutting wrists when not directly suicidal - I just want to say, that for people who self-harm regularly (as opposed to someone who is trying to slit their wrists to die), there's an awareness of the fact that if you go too deep in certain places, you do serious damage. I would assume that most people who deliberately harm on their arms, like myself, deliberately avoid hitting things like tendons or arteries, unless they're so unwell that they're not really in control of what they're doing.

Me - why do I cut on my arms? Well, they're easy to reach. Because I'm fat, arranging my body in a way that would be comfortable to sit and harm on my thighs is just difficult. I do harm my lower legs from time to time but mostly it's my arms. They're easy to reach, and it's where it feels best. Plus, I know I can wear long sleeves, and being as I'm in an adult mental health system, SH that's not dangerous (mine's usually not) is not considered a huge issue.

It differs for everyone, but I've actually come across far more people that SH on their thighs and torsos/hips than those that SH on their arms/wrists.
