urges - August 29th 2013, 10:47 AM

um hi guys

okay so i normally do it on my upper thighs because i can easily hide it under shorts and stuff. I used to do it on my wrist when i first started but the marks made me feel uncomfortable and really edgy trying to keep them hidden from people and i didn't like it so yeh, i switched to thighs and i feel more comfortable with it.
but lately I've had massive urges to do it on my wrist so badly. The urges are so strong! But i know I'll have a tough time hiding it... Actually i can't hide it at all because i have to keep my wrist free at all times (no bracelets, ect) because I'm trying to get rid of the eczema on my wrist.
I'm finding this situation really stressful and frustrating... I don't really know what i can do... I only get the urges on my wrist...
please help?
thanks /:

I would take a look at the Alternatives to Self-Harm Sticky located at the top of the SH forum. Lots of great ideas there, hopefully you'll find something there that works!

Hi Charlie, that sounds really hard for you. Have you had a looked at the self harm alternatives? If not, maybe have a look at them as they are really useful. You could also write a distraction list for yourself and keep it somewhere easy to access so you can refer to it when you feel the urge to self harm.

You could always try getting your feelings out by either writing or drawing them, this can help as it means you don't have to bottle up your feelings. Alternatively you could try phoning a friend or relative.

Hope this helps, take care. Feel free to VM or PM me if you need anything, I'm always here if you want to talk

I've tried stuff on the alternatives list, physical and non-physical, but i can't find anything that works. I try writing a song but it doesn't work for this.

i really don't know, it's really difficult

Maybe try keeping your hands busy? Sometimes, I used to have to sit down and weave string to keep myself calm. You said physical alternatives weren't working for you. Could you try visual ones? Such as using red marker or pen?

Sorry to hear that Another thing you could try is using a glow stick, activate it when you feel the need to self harm and tell yourself you can't self harm until its stopped glowing; as it glows for several hours the urges will usually pass before its stopped glowing.
