This is kinda odd... - September 2nd 2013, 04:10 AM

I have a great life.
I have a great relationship with God.
But for some reason...
I want to cut.
I don't know why.
I guess I'm just curious
About how it feels
And if it really helps.
Should I just try it once?
See if I like it?
Will I become addicted?
Why do I feel this way?

LOVE YOURSELF......after all, do you think God would make you a failure if He modeled you AFTER HIMSELF, who is perfect in every way?

Hey there,

This isn't odd at all! If you have seen people in your life who have coped by self harming, or even if you've seen people on here who have talked about it a lot, maybe you are curious about what they are going through when they do it, since it seems to help them?

But, in reality, it's not worth starting to self harm. You definitely can be addicted. Some people get addicted on their first try, while for others it takes a few tries. You definitely don't want to risk that. It can lead down a slippery slope, and you don't deserve that.

You definitely shouldn't try it just once to see if you like it. It's not worth starting to learn negative ways to cope with your emotions. Maybe you can use one of these alternatives when you need a way to cope. Maybe you can use self expression to get it out, or even talk to people about what's going on. It's not worth self harming. In the end, doing it will just make things worse. You aren't solving any of your problems so the feelings come back, and you have to worry about hiding the injuries and preventing infection. When you look at it that way, it's really not worth starting it, even if it's "just to try it."

So, if you're thinking of using self harm to cope, maybe you can discuss whatever may be going on in your life with other people, but it's really not worth even trying just once, because it does consume a person.

Thank you so much! Some of those alternatives were really great.

Whatever you do, don't start self harming. It's not worth it. You may tell yourself it will just be once, or that you'll limit it somehow, but the addiction doesn't work like that. You'll want to do worse and worse, and before you know it, you can be covered in scars. It's really terrifying.

Beyond just the physical effects, self harming makes things worse. I used it as an escape from my depression, but over time, it pushed me lower and lower. It made me hate myself even more because hurting myself reinforced my idea that I deserved pain.

Obviously, you have problems in your life if you're considering self harm as a release. I would suggest talking to your friends, family, or even a counselor, because that is a great way to get the bad feelings out without hurting yourself.
