Scratching - November 23rd 2013, 08:49 AM

So I was wondering if I'm the only one that does what I'm about to explain. Anyways I have very think skin so I'm able to scratch my skin raw until it bleeds. Anyways at times I feel like I need something to pick so it will scratch my skin raw and till it bleeds so for about the next week I have something to pick then I let it heal but it leaves a nasty ass scar. Anyways my question is do other people do this or am I the only one? And another question do people find this weird? Because it's not done from emotion it's just done on urges of wanting something to pick. Anyways please don't list the alternative thread I know about it and it doesn't work for me. Besides this is different from my cutting or scratching from emotion.

Hi there, I'm sure your not the only one who does this. It might be useful for you to talk to someone you trust about whats going on like a trusted family member or friend, you could even write them a letter if you felt you couldn't physically tell them yourself. Make sure you look after your wounds, you can find first aid information here.
I'm always here if you want to talk

I'm here if anyone wants to talk, I'm always here. Feel free to VM or PM me

Re: Scratching - November 24th 2013, 02:28 AM

I used to do something very similar to this. I'd pick at the skin on my arms until it was very raw and scabbed, and it became such a habit that it went on for months (maybe longer, I don't remember) and got bad enough that it took probably at least a month for my arms to heal after I stopped. I wore long sleeves every day the whole time I did this, so I must have been at least subconsciously trying to hide it, even though I wasn't trying to hurt myself; it was just a compulsion. My mom finally noticed that I was doing it, and she basically forced me to stop because she'd check my arms a lot. Her theory was that I did it because of stress, and she may have been right.

It might be very difficult, but you definitely need to try to stop doing this. If it's leaving scars, it's clearly causing severe damage to your skin, some of which could eventually be permanent. You could also get an infection from this. If you can stop on your own, great. You might want to talk to someone though, especially because of the possibility that this behavior actually does stem from something other than harmless compulsion. It could be stress-related, or related to something else. As for methods of quitting, maybe you could write a message on your arms where you usually pick that will remind you not to do it. Or you could find an alternative to picking your skin that could become your "new habit," such as picking off nail polish or something. But no matter what you do, you definitely need to discontinue this.

I wish you luck! Compulsions are difficult to stop, but give it some time and patience and you can deal with this.

Re: Scratching - November 25th 2013, 01:20 AM

Thank you for your reply. But I have scars all over my body for cutting and picking so it makes no difference to me because they will be there the rest of my life. Anyways I was just wondering if I was the only one that did this and I can see from your post I'm not. So thanks
