the point of quitting self harm is the damage it does to you body not only physically but emotionally and mentally.
you begin to think you need to self harm and you really dont, you are better without it. to quit is to realize that you have to handle your problems head on instead of focusing on the pain. its scary and hard to do but once you handle problems on your own you will feel healtier and less depressed, angry, upset. you will feel more alive. not only that after you beat your addiction you will feel self improved and happier. side effects can vary, doing damage to your body will have a negative effect, the more you do the more just one cut isnt enough it will become mulitple, you could go to deep, or loose to much blood and pass out. the list goes on and on and i dont want to see any of that happening to you. i believe in you, stay strong, quitting is well worth it! |

Hello Carrie,
![]() Like Katie said, I good reason to stop self injury is because it does harm to your body, both physically and mentally. You can also make more personal reason to stop. If you quit, you can wear short sleeves without having to worry without being caught. I found that I self injured because I was stress. One of the reasons I was stressed was because I was afraid I would get caught, so I would self harm and the cycle continued. Breaking the cycle is important. Your signature says you are 28 days without self injury. Good job! ![]() PM me anytime if you want to talk. |

Hey there Carrie,
It’s hard to give up self harm and it’s easy to keep asking ‘What’s the point of this?” if you don’t like something (quitting). There is an answer – that’s already been given – but it’s up to you as to whether you listen to the answer or not. I know that when I’m feeling the urge or not feeling motivated, I do find myself asking that question over and over. It’s hard to listen to the answer, right? It’s worth listening to it, though. Though it’s already been said, the point of giving up is because self harming is just that – it is causing harm to yourself, both body and mind. You don’t have to self harm though, and that’s why you should try and quit. It’s hard, but it’s worthwhile. You don’t need to hurt yourself, Carrie – there are a million other alternatives out there. Have you checked out the Alternatives Sticky (http://teenhelp.org/alternatives)? There’s loads of other, much safer, things you could do there instead of hurting yourself. Self harm is a coping method – a way to deal with your emotions when things get tough or overwhelming. What you need to do is to discover some safer coping mechanisms that work for you. Do you speak to a counsellor? They’re very good at working with you to discover something that may help you – you should think about what relaxes you or what you like doing, they can often be used as coping methods. Self harm is also a vicious cycle – you feel bad so you want to self harm and so you self harm and then in return you feel bad, therefore you self harm again. It’s something that’s easy to get trapped into and giving into the urge to self-harm only strengthens the cycle and your self harm can become worse and become extremely dangerous. As you can imagine, inflicting wounds is not a safe thing to do to your body and can have awful results such as scarring, blood loss and even death. Take care, Carrie – you can get through this. |
