Cutting is an addiction, once you get started, you can fall into a pattern and after awhile you don't even need a reason, you just cut out of habit... I know that you have the willpower to stop though... Stay strong, I know you can do it

You know, you don't have to continue if you don't want to. (Of course, I know it's easier said than done. Self-injury is an addiction, after all.) Do you have any ideas as to why you might be self-injuring? Is there something in your life that causes you to feel stressed out or bad about yourself?

A lot of people turn to this behavior because they are trying to cope with something, which is what I'm guessing might be the problem. Find out what emotional pain it is you're trying to replace with physical pain, and maybe learn to avoid or handle those pains better. Check out the alternatives thread in the Self-Harm forum for ideas. You could even talk to someone the next time you feel triggered. I'm always here if you'd like to private message me.

Stay strong and be confident. I have faith that you can move through this and come out on top. =]

I got threatened with being committed if i kept doing it, so i hid everything i used and just stopped. It wasn't easy, but i did it. I find i'm angrier than i was before, but i suppose anger is a healthy emotion. Surrender to those emotions, they suck but they're normal, self harming shouldn't have to be normal for you. Just keep faith. xx

Hey Jaymi,

I'm sorry that you feel as though you have to keep cutting and that you have been cutting a lot lately. It can be a very difficult addiction to deal with and generally goes round in a vicious circle. You feel bad, you cut, you feel bad again, then cut.
Self harm is a coping mechanism. It's a good idea to try and stop this vicious circle and try to find new coping mechanisms. To start with, it may be best to simply try distractions. Try distracting yourself with a good, safe activity for about 10 minutes. If you feel it isn't helping, try something else and keep trying other, safer activities.
Remind yourself that you do not deserve this Jaymi, you do not deserve to hurt. You are better than this.

Keep safe.

cutting is an addiction as the other posts have said. Try to identify the problems and see what's so bad about it that makes you want to cut and then think of solutions to the problem. Another method I used was I said to myself if I feel this way tomarro night I'll cut and then the next night if I still wanted to cut I said the same thing to myself again the next night and I just kept going like that until I was feeling good enough so I knew I didn't need to.

Re: I keep cutting - June 8th 2010, 06:50 PM

I've dealt with cutting myself, and some of my friends have gone through it too. It really is complicated and you feel lost.

I know from expierence that people telling you to stay strong gets on your nerves, and it really is easier said then done.

There's a lot of tricks on how to stop like:
Cutting cold-turkey
Therapy
Hiding everything to keep yourself from doing it
Distraction

and a lot more.

But the best advice I can give you is find something that gives you a little hope. Even if it's as simple as waiting for the trees to get their leaves back. If you get a little hope, you can start to see a little clearer and it makes a little more sense.

Best of luck, and hope you make it through this.
