Question Tanning and scars? - June 21st 2010, 04:25 AM

Just a quick question, does tanning, like a natural go outside and sit in sun tan help scars to look let noticable? Or does it make them worse?

Thanks!

Less noticeable for me.
In the summer my scars all kinda turn bluey green whitey kinda thing, but in the summer it blends well with my tan.

My scars stand out more when I tan, or go in the sun even. It depends on your skin type and how your body tans. When my skin gets darker the scars appear whiter, which makes them visible. It might work differently for you, but it won't make them less noticeable, and the sun can be damaging to scars.

I think it really all depends on your skin type and area.
The scars on my arm are way more visible when I'm tan, but the ones on my legs are less noticeable. I guess it's sort of a trial and error thing?

Like said in an earlier post, I think it depends on your skin type. As the sun made most of mine completely disappear.

Re: Tanning and scars? - June 23rd 2010, 02:13 AM

Although I don't tan personally, my sister has a couple of scars from silly childhood things. When she tans, her scars become less noticeable, especially the one under her eye (incident with the dog when she was like, 5). Also, my oldest brother has a couple scars (accidents), and they're not noticeable because he's naturally tan.

So once again, I think it depends on your skin type. I mean, worst-case, you can get rid of a tan.

I have white scars so they tend to stand out against my dark skin. But I'm going to assume if your scars are darker they'll blend in.

Re: Tanning and scars? - June 25th 2010, 04:11 PM

Just be sure and wear sunscreen! I was told (so I'm not entirely sure of the credibility) that scar tissue is more sensitive to the sun and can put you at greater risk for skin cancer, so while it's important to wear sunscreen all over (), it's also important to make sure you put sunscreen over the scarred area, as well (and yes, this is true even if you're the sort that "tans and doesn't burn"). In answer to your original question, it depends on your skin type; I have very fair skin, and I don't really tan, so mine tend to be noticeable either way.

I'm naturally tan, but when it gets deeper i think my scars stand out a little more.

I'm naturally a porcelain color (like one of the dolls many girls had growing up). When I tan, I get a nice shade of brown. My scars stay white and are very noticeable. Many of them have become raised as well. In the winter, they are not that noticeable.

When I tan in the beginning of summer, my scars get darker making them at times look more noticable. But the more I tan, the more they blend in. So it might just take time, but they will blend.
