Why now? - November 18th 2010, 02:46 AM

Its been about a year. I haven't done anything. Okay, maybe the occasional scratch that lasted a bit too long during an itch or running my nails on my wrist every now and then (didn't break skin, or scratch, just ran them over my wrist), but nothing like wanting to actually cut or hurt myself in any way.

Now I am having those urges.

Why? Sure, college is stressing me pretty badly, I'm having some relationship problems, and I suffer from occasional seasonal depression, but I was going through this when I quit cutting a year ago. Nothing has really changed, and I'm actually doing better with grades and I feel like I'm a better person NOT cutting than I ever did when I was.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on with me right now.

Also, another interesting point: the one set of scars I still have on my leg (yeah, I kinda really did a lot of damage) only itches when I get too stressed. It's like an indicator to back off or something. Kind of cool, in my opinion, just wondering if any of you other guys and girls out there have something like that.

Well first let me say congrats on not self-harming for that long. For the urges look at the thread on alternatives to self-harm, it is very useful as long as you keep trying different techniques to find one that is right for you. College can be very stressful, and I am sorry that you are going through a rough time relationship wise. I understand how bad depression can hurt, trust me I understand. As with the scars, mine itch when I get stressed, tired, and cold. I myself have wondered if that was weird or if I was the only one that it happened to, but now I feel a little better knowing that I'm not the only one. I hope this helped a little. Good Luck and feel free to PM me anytime.

Congratulations on not self-harming for that long! You must be really proud of yourself.
College can be extremely stressful. Though college and high school has a different environment, I can understand what you mean when it comes to the stress because of education. I just finished high school and it really stressed me out too.
As Nicole mentioned, try checking out the Alternatives to Self Harm:
http://www.teenhelp.org/forums/f12-s...ves-self-harm/
You can also try talking to someone to help you with the urges to self harm to such as a councillor, friend, family member or even a professor. They will help you overcome this and by talking to someone, it allows you to release some of the stress of your chest. Taking some time for yourself is also important. Do whatever makes you happy such as reading, writing or listening to relaxing music. You can even try Yoga so you'll feel more calm.
I hope I helped. If you ever need anything feel free to message me.
