My friend.. - December 9th 2010, 08:41 PM

Wow, I haven't made a new thread here in a long time.. Luckily this time isn't for me (although I am still struggling with my addiction).

Today I was in wellness and I saw my friend's wrist. I talked to her a little, and to me it seems like she's becoming depressed and desperate. She'd only cut a little, but that's how I started out, and I'm so afraid that she's going to go farther. I got her to make an appointment with Mrs. Sheets, and I'm hoping that will help. However, I'd like to try to support her some too, since she was willing to talk with me about it. I'm afraid of being hypocritical (I have no idea if she's seen my arms when I haven't been wearing my jacket in wellness..) and I don't want to push her farther. Do any of you have advice for me to help her, or any advice I could pass on to her?

Hey Katie.

I think it's great you're interesting in helping out your friend. But before you begin, just remember that sometimes you have to come first - don't take her failures as your own, and don't let her troubles become yours. While you can support her, you can't expect to make everything better for her.

The best thing you can do is be there for her. You shouldn't pressure her to talk to you about it; just let her know you're there if she wants to. Maybe you could give her some ideas for alternatives to cutting or dealing with low moods?

At the end of the day, how she acts is her responsibility. While supporting your friend is good, don't forget that you deserve support too, and sometimes you have to put yourself first.

All the best.
