Anti-Triggering - December 15th 2010, 02:38 AM

There are many alternatives to self-harm. The thing is, they often don't work because they don't eliminate the triggers that create the urge. So does anyone have any anti-triggers that give them a strong or at least significant desire not to self harm? Is there something you can do or think about that not only satisfies but eliminates the actual urge to self-harm?

Honestly the only thing I've found that eliminates the urge is the rubber band on the wrist thing, but really that is also SH. I think the point of using the alternatives is using them to focus to be able to overcome the urge, as hard as it may be.

For me, what I've found is that logic helps. When I feel triggered, I ask myself, 'If I self harm, will it really make the problem go away?'. Every time, the answer's no, and that's often enough to make me not want to self harm. Writing also helps. If I write about what's bothering me, then the need for self harm diminishes.

The thought of how much it would hurt (and has hurt in the past) my loved ones is always enough to stop me even thinking of it.
