Re: Fail... - March 2nd 2011, 05:41 PM

I've found over the years that other people are not usually reason enough to stop cutting. It can be confusing, because you can love your boyfriend or friends or family and see their concern and want to stop for them. But then, in the moment, the feelings overwhelm you and you can forget about all that and choose to SH. Then you may be left with a terrible sense of guilt for hurting the ones you love and anger for being unable to stop. Because of that, you then have to hurt yourself more...and so the vicious cycle begins.

The truth is, other people can't make you stop. In the end the reason for really wanting to quit and get better has to reside within yourself. That can be achieved with the support of family and friends, and most often with therapy. Sometimes, if your cutting is a symptom of a mood disorder, with medications. But before all these things can help, you have to want to stop for you. Nobody else is going to be able to make you. It's sad and it's scary, but it's true.

Figuring out why you want to do it and addressing that can be a good way to begin developing a desire to stop. If you are looking for a place to start, that's a good one. From there, use the support of those who love you to help keep you on track, but you must hold yourself accountable too, if you want to stay away from it long term.

I hope this has helped you somehow. If you ever want to talk, feel free to PM me.
