Ways of controlling anger? - March 5th 2009, 09:16 PM

I've started having a really bad temper recently and i'm getting easily frustrated and very angry with myself to the point where I sometimes literally try and beat myself up ... and I know there's ways on here distraction from self harm, but what I was looking for is any ideas on how to control your anger and prevent self harm altogether? If you have like your own ways of controlling your anger what are they?

Cos I take it out on myself,but then take it out on people who care about me by shouting at them

Hey-

The best advice I can give, is to take it out on something else. Anger is a thing I have a problem with myself sometimes, and what you have to do, is just make sure you use it in a constructive, not destructive way. At least, use that mentality when going towards any living being.
Some people have good luck with a punching bag, though make sure that you wear gloves! Other ideas are have a pillow fight with the way (As stupid as that sounds, it works sometimes!) journal or rant to someone, rip up paper, or my favorite, is throw ice cubes in a sink or bathtub, or against some bricks.

You can really find some good ways to release anger without hurting anyone, which is the main goal - to get through it with no one coming out hurt.

Do you play a sport? Whenever I get really angry.. I go and slap some softballs with my good 'ol softball bat. I used to be able to just play but now I have to go to the batting cages. You could try a sport? Or you could try running or punching a pillow?

Sport Arts and Msuic are the three best things to use anger for.
Pent up sport are best if you want to set yourself some goals,that will give you something to concertrate on and help prevent you anger.
Team sports are better if you need a distraction frmo what may lead to SH
Msuic weather making or listening to the right type is a brilliant way to get your anger out to.
Screaming at a song you love or finding some tunes to mosh to,Gigs are brilliant becasue astomsphere gives you less chance to reflect on the anger that leads to SH.
The same with Art many artists had many issues and it is always a good way to express how you feel without actually having to say much.

You must be feeling horrible about this! I'm sorry! *hug*
There are lots of things you can do, I guess, like mentioned in the posters above. But truly, you have to allow the anger to escape your system. How much ever you may try to distract yourself, you still have to able to let go of the anger.
When you feel angry, you would know right? Then, if you know you're angry, try to find the root of the anger or what has caused it and work on that. Try pushing it away from you. Listening to bubbly, dancy music takes a lot of anger out. At least, it' helped me alot!
Try to find something that suits you, that you want to do, not what someone else asks you to do to release the anger...that just sometimes magnifies it!

There's lots of things you can do to control your anger..
- Draw =) It's fun .... I've realised that if you draw things, you don't feel so angry and you can draw what you want.
- Write ... Do you have a diary? I've found that by writing stuff, It helps to control my anger by putting things into perspective.
- Hit something ... Like a pillow, i'm not talking about a little brother or sister =P it may sound quite stupid but it does help =)

Erm.. I can't really think of much for you because I'm usually on the SH topics and stuff but I really do hope this helps you.

I usually don't do much about it. I keep it in and mutter under my breath and refrain from punching a wall or something. I wouldn't advise keeping it in, but I definetly wouldn't say go yell at someone either.
Try breathing in through your mouth and nose in big clensing breathes and count to whatever number in your head until you calm down. It sounds stupid but it does help to clear your mind.
Or you could walk away from whatever is making you angry and do something you like to do, like if you play an instrument do that or punch a pillow, play a sport, do something other then anything destructive towards you or another person.

I have the same problem with anger, I go on walks alot just to think and calm down, I also like to play with my dogs, or if need be write things down, but if that doesn't help usually working out helps because your focused on something else.
