It was like that a lot for me too. When I first started getting suicidal thoughts it was much like that. Methods and ways of doing it and not actually doing it. I would share a thought that I had with you but I do not want to give you anymore ideas. I also felt the same way, when I used to cut myself and if I didn't bleed and if I didn't bleed enough I felt like I was a bad cutter, that I was a laughing joke to the cutter community. Weird I know but its just how I was. Even though the self harming community is HUGE and they don't know me. I just felt like that. My thoughts about doing things to myself were like yours as well.
If your therapist isn't getting it, maybe talk to your mom or dad or both or even your therapist and tell them its just not working for you that you need to see someone new. Someone that can help you get through it better or someone that can relate more. I don't know if it is possible but perhaps see if you can see someone who specializes in this kind of therapy. Someone who is fimillar with self harm and helping people with it.

Hey Sam,

I'm so sorry you're feeling this way and experiencing all of this. I understand how horrible it must be for you, and I'm proud of you for reaching out to us in order to get some help. Things can get better.

I'm wondering if you've tried the SH alternatives on TH. IF you havn't, I feel they're a great way to distract yourself whenever you get urges to cut. Here's a link for you: http://www.teenhelp.org/alternatives. Not all of these are going to work, but don't be put off by that. Keep trying until you find the ones that do, and they will more than likely help you out a bit and make the urges easier to over come.

You say your councellor doesn't get it. Has he said this, or do you just feel he isn't understanding you? Perhaps you could try putting it across in a different way and making him understand it a bit more by using other methods of explanation. If this fails, maybe there is another person you could see? Could you maybe try another councellor or doctor?

Whatever you do, I wish you all the best and luck for it all. I know it's hard to go through something like this alone, so feel free to PM me at any time if you ever want to talk, and I mean that, I'm happy to help, okay?

Take care,
Hollie.

thankyou hollie,
i haven't tried the SH alternatives, but i'll look at the link.
my counsellor doesn't appear to think cutting is a big deal, and we don't discuss it very much. he hasn't mentioned a personal experience of depression or self-harm, so i'm not sure he understands.
thanks for the help

Are you talking about just a counselor from school? Because if he can't talk to you about that then it seems like maybe you should go to someone else that understands that type of situation and specifically is there to help you with that.
