The real reason my nails are so long... - September 10th 2011, 02:48 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

My nails are each like an inch long... They're sharp and they hurt. When I scratch myself it burns. At the end of a day when I feel low in self confidence I etch a word onto my stomach that describes what I think of myself like "bitch" or "fat". When I first started my ED I would take either my nails or a pin and write "fat" on my stomach as many times as I could. It hurts but it reminds me to be the perfect liar I am. I want to stop this but if I stop I don't want to be how I am ad bad. But I want to change for the better. And Kahane says I never will.

Hey there.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been hurting yourself, but I'm glad you've reached out to us here. That shows that you really want to change, which is the first step in recovery, so you're on the right track.

It sounds like you have a lot of negative thoughts about yourself, which is something I definitely relate to. There are some things, though, that you can do to reduce these - things that won't hurt you. For example, you could write the words on a piece of paper and then tear it up; you could counter each positive with a negative; you could get someone to write you a list of good things about yourself and read that when you feel down.

Recovery can be a long and painful process, but it's definitely worth it. Do you have anyone you can talk to about this, like friends, family members, or even a therapist? You don't have to do this alone - you deserve help and support, and you may not get that if you don't ask for it. Deciding to stop can be a difficult decision, so take your time and, above all, be nice to yourself.

Good luck.

Nothing in the world is
the way it ought to be.
It's harsh, and cruel.

But that's why there's us - champions.
Doesn't matter where we come from,
what we've done or suffered,
or even if we make a difference.

We live as though the
world is as it should be,
to show it what it can be.

It's really great that you've decided to change and found a place where you can get support
When I get the urge to self harm, I browse through this list of alternatives and keep myself occupied with them. My favourites are the ones which take up time and distracts you, because you feel good about yourself afterwards and you then don't feel the need to self harm
If you need someone to talk to, I'm here for you! Stopping is a really hard thing to do and it's admirable for you to do this!
Take Care!
