Does the doctor have to do something? - November 5th 2011, 01:24 AM

I think my cut is infected, but if the hospital finds out it's from self harming (it's kind of obvious) do they have to do something?

You can say that you do not feel like hurting yourself or committing suicide. If they ask what happened with the cuts, you can say you were drunk or something, or be honest and they may or may not commit you for 72 hours. As far as I know, you have to currently be having a psychiatric emergency to be committed.

If you tell them it's from self-harm, they'll most likely tell your parents but if you don't say how you got cut; they won't know 100% so they aren't gonna tell.

They might refer you to psych services and have someone come and talk to you before they let you go home. They might also write a letter to your doctor. It's unlikely that they will keep you in hospital for self harm unless it's life threatening and you tell them that you're going to do it again as soon as you get out of there.
