Unhappy Wanting to self harm, please help - December 4th 2011, 01:05 PM

I've cut myself in the past, but now I'm like a week free. Today I was seeing some pictures of myself and I found one where my wrist is full of bracelets to hide the cuts (later I started cutting in other places, so no one would notice). And right now, I'm really needing/wanting to cut again, can you give me some advice please?

Heya, you should probably try some Alternatives to Self-Harm.

You know how much scars suck, so why not give it a try, and see if any alternatives help you.

Like Julz said, you should look at the Alternatives because they are extremely helpful. For the future, you can also try writing down what you feel at a certain time or what is triggering you. Then, on a good day, you can look back and try to sort out what has triggered you and what you might be able to do to help yourself next time that issue arises. It will also help you get out what you feel on a piece of paper. Stay strong.

Re: Wanting to self harm, please help - December 4th 2011, 08:33 PM

Hi there.

I'm really sorry that you are struggling with self harm and urges again. Well done on being a week self harm free, that's really amazing and something you should hold on to to help keep you going.

There is no 'easy' way to beat urges. It can sometimes be easier than other times but at the worst its going to take a lot of pain and determination to get through those moments. Now, like the others who have replied have already said, I do want to encourage you to take another look at the alternatives to self harm list because there are a lot of things on there and there will be something which helps you it's just about finding it, so if you try something and it doesn't help, don't stop. Keep on trying because it's all about trial and error.

I know that in that moment when you have urges to hurt yourself it can be incredibly hard to even bother to beat them or distract yourself. How about when you're in a better mood and you are thinking positively and about how you want to beat self harm, you write yourself a little letter reminding yourself you do want to get out of self harm and beat this and the reasons why and then some self encouragement. That might help you get through those moments because it will help you realise that you do want to beat this.

Is there any reason as to why you want to self harm? For some people they want to feel the physical pain to stop the emotional pain, for others it's about seeing the blood and having a release where as for other people it's a form of punishment. What is your reason? What triggers you?

Something I use to use a lot is to snap a glow band when you get an urges and then you're not allowed to hurt yourself in any way until it has stop glowing which, on average is a good eight - fourteen hours by which time, the urges would have hopefully passed and you will feel better. Maybe it's worth a try.

I know it's hard for you right now but remember you ARE worth more than self harm and you can beat this and live a life with out it. You don't deserve the pain you put yourself through when you hurt yourself. You can beat this, don't stop fighting and don't ever be alone. Let people in and have someone to talk too.

I hope this helps. Stay safe lovely.

Jessie
