I've had this problem before. Usually I say that I was bored and was just doodling. People don't tend to ask me though, which is a good thing.
You explain the butterfly project to them and tell them you're just supporting people who SH I suppose.
Usually the doodling excuse or saying a friend or sibling drew them on you works.
Good luck, and I hope it all works out.
You can PM me any time if you need anything.
Welcome to the site by the way.

I will be generous with my love today. I will sprinkle compliments and uplifting words everywhere I go. I will do this knowing that my words are like seeds and when they fall on fertile soil, a reflection of those seeds will grow into something greater.

Hi there.

Firstly it's great that you're using the butterly project. I hope that it helps you!

I guess you really have two options. Be honest or make something up. There is nothing wrong with admitting 'Because I self harm and it helps me to deal with it and is a good alternative for me'. But, understandably, that can be hard and if you don't feel you can do that, then that is okay. Just saying you've been doodling is dandy idea. They can't fight against that You could just say I was bored and so be it.

I hope this helps and I hope things are going well for you. Take good care,
