My Friend Keeps Begging Me Not to Do It, But I Just... - March 19th 2012, 04:43 PM

I have this best friend who is like my sister, and she has almost always understood me about everything. But she doesn't understand depression and SH. She can't see why I don't just turn on the lights and smile. She keeps begging me to not hurt myself, and that only makes me want to hurt myself more, because I hate who I am and what I do to people.

Is anybody else dealing with having friends who just don't understand your SH?

Hi there.

Its really good that younhave a close friend and even though you feel as though she doesn't understand, i do think it's really great that you were able to tell her about the self harm.

I've never really spoken my friends (apart from on here) about my self harm etc, so it's a little hard for me to relate to this. However, i do know it can be hard for people to understand why one would inflict pain upon themselves if they've never experienced those thoughts and feelings themselves. Have you tried to really explain to your friend about how you're feeling and why you self harm? It might really help. If you have maybe you could try something else such as printing off information about self harm andlet her read it to try and help her understand a little more.

I really hope this helps a little. We're here for you if you ever need to talk or anything.

Take good care,
Jessie

Hey Rosy

It is great that your friend is trying to help you through this. I have a friend who knows, but she can't really understand it that well. I can try explaining things to her and she will understand them a bit, but not completely. It is not possible to understand things like these till you actually go through them. But that doesn't change the fact that she can help you a lot through this. Let her know what kind of support you want from her. Tell her that begging you to not do it is not working and what would work. Maybe simply talking would. But you will have to guide her a bit.

Keep us updated on it and please don't hesitate to PM/VM me if you need to talk.
Stay safe and strong

I had a friend just like that. For some reason though, she made me feel worse. I guess she pushed me over the edge sometime because she would make a big deal if I didn't tell her every second of my life. I just couldn't take it. Its hard for people to understand what we go through. StayStrong and bethe best you can be
