Reward Systems! - April 16th 2012, 10:13 AM

I just recently thought of a new way to avoid SH. I hope this is the right place for this, if not, CharliandJessIloveyou.

It can work in a few ways. One, set up a weekly reward system!
"If I can get a week without SH, I will buy myself a new scarf." or "If I can go a week without SH, I will take the day off Friday and go out with my friends." or "This will be my fourth week without SH, I will have a party in the TeenHelp chatroom and Revolution will sing the "Four weeks" song." (This is in the works... )

The second is if you have a bit of change, for every day you go, put a coin in a jar of any amount. Depending on what kind of coin you use (or mix) by a year, you will have things that can add up for a treat! And rather than punishing yourself for messing up by dumping it, this should be reward only, so just don't put a coin in on relapse days, and continue the system afterwards. That way, you're not punishing and making yourself feel bad, but just continuing your good habits after a small fall.

Any other reward ideas?

These are really awesome ideas Traci! I'm going to try the first one out.

Just another general idea, I try to make goals for no self harm. Like "I'm going to work hard to make it a week self harm free." And that way when you DO get there you feel really proud of yourself. It may be easier to go without self harming if you have something to work for. That just helped me make it to a month.

Awesome idea Traci

I read this one on the Internet-

Hi,
I've stopped biting finger nail for 1 month. A bit of sharing as in how i stop finger nail biting. Hope the concept helps.
"If I want to get back together with my ex-girlfriend, I have to stop finger nail biting. If I stop biting for 24 hour, I get to give her a call. Once I bite my fingers, the "24 hours" period restarts from the moment I bite my fingers."
The idea is: I really really like to/love to/wish to/dream to/fancy getting back together with my ex-girlfriend. Whenever, I bite my fingers, I was like, "shit... I have to wait for another 24 hours".
When I look at my fingers, I think of my ex gf; the thought of calling her makes me stop biting my finger not to trigger the 24 hours count down; Stop biting my fingers make me look forward to calling her.
For me, the important point/main idea/strategy is:
If there is something you really really want, make that your aim/objective/target/dream, and stop yourself from biting fingers if you really want to achieve that. Calling ex-girlfriend every day is what i want in order to get back with her. If i bite my fingers, i can not call her as a form of punishment for doing bad things.
Hope this punishment VS reward concept helps.

So this can be anyone for you, your boyfriend/girlfriend/ a friend/ teacher/ pet/ any family member/ or even TH!!

That's a really good idea, actually. Wish I'd thought of this before I went out and bought a video game, though, because that was pretty much the only thing I wanted for a few months.

I like this idea. My pastor rewards me in small ways if he sees I haven't all week. It makes me feel good. Of course he only does it for the cuts not the burns so it's not as good. But still not cutting is good for me. Now I'll do something for both.

This is a great idea Traci! I will try this.

I like these ideas, personally I really can't afford any of the options, but it's still a good idea.

This is a great idea!
Also, if you can't afford to do this... there are other ways of rewarding yourself, like making your favorite dessert, maybe going somewhere you enjoy.
This is just a thought, make it personalized! It's up to you.

I do this. When I'm a week SH free, I put coins in my jar - and I am currently up to $19 - I haven't put any more change in there lately, but it's still quite a lot. If I don't have any change to put away, I take myself to the ocean because that's my favorite spot to be. It's just around the corner from my house and I absolutely love sitting by the water. So, those are my two reward systems.

Not we gotta start up the "cheap" ideas. My monetary amount hasn't been much either.
